I own both Harry Potter Film Wizardry and Harry Potter Film Wizardry (Revised and Expanded) and they are almost identical.The only differences are:1)The 1/3-page paper belt which wrap the book cover2)In the 2010 version, the last 2 pages are "sneak peak" of the final movie. These 2 pages are gone in the 2012 version and the photos from these 2 pages are nowhere to be found in the Revised and Expanded version. In the Revised and Expanded version, we get 6 pages of new materials from the final movie: the return to Gringotts, the Battle of Hogwarts, the Deathly Hallows, and the Tales of Three Brothers.3)An additional material: a pocket/envelope, which contains a booklet Film Photo Diary, embedded on the inner side of the back cover. Nothing spectacular about this additional material: just a few photos from each of the movies (and only 1 page is dedicated to each movie).For those who missed out on the 2010 version, go ahead and purchase this. Fantastic! This movie is an overview of the filming of Harry Potter and I loved it! It's colorful and beautiful, really magical. Every page is immersed in the design and world of HP. The book features most of the characters, creatures, sets, etc. and goes through the movies chronologically.I especially loved the Marauders Map, Hogwarts acceptance letter, Yule Ball program, etc. These added an awesome touch of the real thing.In case you're wondering, there is some overlap with Page to Screen (see my review here: https://www.amazon.com/review/R17H4CSCK0549/ref=cm_cr_srp_d_rdp_perm?ie=UTF8) but this book is much more visual. It's more exciting and fun. Worth getting both.

This has to be the coolest book. It is packed full of paper extras. My favorites were the Yule Ball program and Marauder's Map. It is full of movie insights and facts, and is very colorful. I am so glad I purchased the book thanks to a recommendation. I was wanting to buy the Marauder's Map from The Noble Collection, but was re-directed to this book, (there were multiple comments about it) because it was included with the paper extras. And it is definitely what I was looking for, and won't take up much room. It's really a masterpiece!

Everyone seems to agree that this is a fantastic book, myself included. One of my favorite aspects of the book is that the information is presented in a unique style that reminds me of a scrapbook, and includes a variety of fold-outs and inserts. I have been a Harry Potter fan from the beginning. The books were amazing and the movies brought the stories to life. Kudos to Warner Bros. for choosing Chris Columbus and Stuart Craig. The detail that Stuart Craig and the crew put into the movies was amazing. JK Rowling did give them a lot of details in the books which was great. Chris Columbus gave such heart to the movies. The actors he picked were the best. The kids, thankfully, grew up, I believe, in a nurturing environment. This book gives you an inside to the movie props that I could not imagine. I loved the Yule ball invitation and the Potions book, and the World Cup program and other items. All I can say is WOW! WOW! This books is so good. I RECOMMEND THIS BOOK TO ANYONE WHO IS A FAN OF THE BOOKS AND MOVIES!!! Again the detail you bring in this book is just breathtaking.

I own all of Elinor Lipman's books and have read them multiple times. Her main strength seems to lie in inventing awful (but not boring) characters that make you wonder what they will do next. However, I have to say, the formula (with more recent books and especially this latest) has gotten old.I agree with other reviewers about the unlikable characters (I thought Geneva was the best drawn of them all):Blank, uninteresting, unsympathetic character Daphne tosses mom's highly annotated yearbook which is found by interesting but also unsympathetic character Geneva. Highjinks to retrieve incendiary yearbook and major life revelations ensue. Trite subplot romance, strangely incestuous-feeling paternity subplot and dad's later-life romance subplot intertwine with main plot of heroine finding herself. By the end, I'm sorry to say most of us will probably not care. Frankly, I wished Daphne would find herself alone and shunned, that's how much I disliked her.As usual, Lipman's writing is clever and erudite and, for that alone, the book is a page-turner. However, also, as usual, there is a weird time warp happening. I'm not sure if anyone else is noticing but with later books Lipman seems stuck in the decades from which she sprang. Her characters' language, appearance and behavior is dated (very 50's, 60's, 70's) and yet her primary characters (in this book) are supposed to be around 30. But the main plot is focused on a yearbook and character antics from 1968 (into the 70's) which is eons away from 2019 (I'm from 1968 so I know). All I can say is that it is weird. If you do the math, the Lipman-world decades don't work right.In all, a light quick read which can be appreciated for Lipman's quality writing. For better Lipman books, I'd recommend (most recently) "The Family Man" and for earlier stuff, maybe "The Dearly Departed" or "The Inn at Lake Devine".

Don't get me wrong, I am a fan of Elinor Lipman. However this book, like the last couple of books, seems rushed. There are a couple of plotlines that have no purpose. Other plotlines have purpose, so much so that it is obvious they've been contrived. More importantly, there isn't a single character in this book that I like or care about! I can't root for the protagonist, she's just not likeable. In fact, she's so unlikeable I want to slap her. There isn't a single character in this book that I can root for. The book isn't funny or delightful, it's just a bunch of sad people making dumb choices. At the end of the book, I asked myself, "why?" Read Lipman's other works. She's usually a good writer, and has put out some really fun books. Just skip this one.

I have read all off Ms. Lipman's novels, and all are funny, poignant, wry, cheerful with the good guy winning. They would make excellent fodder for a sitcom. Good Riddance is no exception. While it's not my favorite (that's Inn at Lake Devine), the reader is drawn into the characters from the beginning. Daphne is a bit daffy, newly moved to a new (small) apartment after a less than a year sham marriage, taking a correspondence course in chocolate making with mixed results, and reentering the singles scene with across the hall neighbor, Jeremy. Her recently deceased mother has left her the yearbook from 1968 Pickering High in a handwritten codicil. It is the source of the trouble, laughs, and collaboration with Geneva, a very wacky neighbor who purports to being a documentary film maker. Geneva reclaims the yearbook that Daphne has sent to the recycling bin in a fit of decluttering. There are a lot of secrets in that book that was dedicated to June, Daphne's mother, teacher and yearbook advisor that year. Some of the events are a bit over the top but still fun. And, as usual, Daphne prevails. When reading this book, I pictured Tina Fey, John Ritter and the like. It was a fun read!

I love her books. All of them have been great and I was so looking forward to this new one. It started out fun and interesting but during the second half I was saying, huh? It really fizzled out and I am disappointed.

Always enjoyable Elinor Lipman keeps us smiling through another lighthearted novel. An interesting coincidence leads to all kinds of family antics. Would be great for Netflix.

I typically love Elinor Lipman witty and satisfying “feel good” books, which are very often romantic and literary social comedies, focusing largely on quirky heroines who navigate a confusing world.But this one is just too contrived. The basics of the plot without spoilers: Daphne Maritch “inherits” her deceased mom’s yearbook, which is filled with notes about the 1968 class. After she decides to toss it out, it falls into the hands of a nosy, trash-diving neighbor Geneva who is determined to research the class, reveal Daphne’s mother’s juicy secrets, and turn it into a docu-drama film project. In the meantime, Daphne tries to protect her widowed father, a recent New York transplant, from the fall-out, and navigate a “friends with benefits” relationship with the handsome and young TV actor who lives across the hall.Among the problems I had was the character of Geneva, who I often wanted to slap! Although Ms. Lipman often pairs repressed and loveable heroines with flamboyant “others”, Geneva’s nosiness and lack of empathy made her someone that most people would stay a mile away from. Daphne, on the other hand, embraces her and even when she realizes her trust is misplaced, she still flies around her like a moth to a frame (for example, accompanying her to the 1968 class reunion, which can’t end well.)There are some preposterous turns of events, particularly as the book winds down. Elinor Lipman’s fluid and entertaining style kept me reading on – this author knows how to build and keep suspense. It’s fun to read but just doesn’t compare to some of this author’s other books.

The real problem, he asserts, is major flaws in government policies and actions as the housing bubble developed compounded by panicky blunders during the crisis.For example, the Federal Reserve provided too much credit for too long under Chairman Alan Greenspan, contributing to the common delusion that the situation was sustainable because the Fed would never allow a financial crisis to happen. Then incoming Chairman Ben Bernanke jammed on the monetary brakes, bringing about an inverted yield curve that forced banks to search for higher yield (and risk) investments – only to revert to radical rescue efforts as one major institution after another got into trouble. While the Fed’s moves might have been appropriate for a liquidity crisis, the true issue was solvency in most cases as the result of excessive leverage and under-performing assets.The FDIC, Fannie Mae & Freddie Mac, the FHA, the SEC, and a bipartisan assortment of political leaders are also criticized. Allison’s points are clear, stated with authority, and ring true. Even if you aren’t convinced by his version of the story, it is well worth reading to see what other observers and the media may have missed.As for suggested solutions, Allison’s free market ideas may seem a bit extreme. The country is not going to eliminate the Federal Reserve and revert to a gold standard, for example, so it might be more to the point to focus on reining in the Fed’s penchant for focusing on the full employment part of its dual mandate while taking a very relaxed attitude towards inflation.And while the concluding chapters about the philosophical differences between liberals and conservatives, etc. are interesting, hoping for a return to following the Constitution as it was originally intended seems rather futile. It might be more to the point to focus on finding a more constructive path forward than the country has been on in recent years.

This book tells something of what happened to the American economy since 2008, somewhat earlier for that matter. The author is a retired CEO of a major financial institution who is a major player in Cato, a libertarian "think tank". Since things are somewhat better it might seem behind the times to read it now but it still has importance today. The issues then are still important now and probably not better understood than they were. A reading of the book provides some understanding of what happened and what is happening. The book also directs the reader to other contemporary texts and to some libertarian classics. The book is neither long nor difficult and I am not an economist. If you are interested in the U.S. economy this will be of interest and worthwhile even if you don't see yourself as a libertarian or conservative.

I started researching the cause of the home industry/financial meltdown in 2007, forming my own opinion, and was interested in someone else’s opinion/conclusion. John Allison’s background certainly qualifies him as a credible source to learn about why and how the crisis occurred. He cites too much government regulation that was poorly designed and grossly mismanaged; and that if community banking had been allowed to maintain prudent lending standards subprime loans would not have exploded.Other reviews criticize his writing style and in the last chapters his partiality to Ayn Rand’s philosophy (I agree that did not advance the subject matter). His writing could have been more polished but I found it down-to-earth and an easy read—as contrasted with other arcane, erudite, and pedantic writings about the crisis. Those who favor big government as master over and regulator of markets obviously disagree with his conclusion. However, to those folks I have asked the following: “Why did community banks in the late 70s depart from prudent lending standards/guidelines and subsequently lend to anyone?”I think Allison answers that convincingly in an easy-to-understand manner that a layman can understand. His analyses/explanations also confirmed my findings in 2007 of the cause of the meltdown.

Well-argued case for a return to a free market economy where the government stops trying to manipulate everything with it's crony capitalism. Unfortunately, I don't see anything changing. The system is too entrenched the way it is and not enough Main Street Americans know about it or care enough to take the time to educate themselves about it. It's a revolving door between Wall Street and K Street. Glad to see that at least some leaders in the industry are willing to write about the flaws in the system.

For background context: I have a fairly extensive art and sculpting background with costuming and cosplay on the side. I got this book for extra tips for techniques, eye candy, and inspiration. While I hoped this would be a good tutorial book, I didn't go into my purchase expecting it.If you have at least intermediate level experience with sfx and costuming, this book is well worth it. Lots of inspirations within its pages and there's enough info for most projects that you could do something similar on your own.I would not recommend this to a beginner as far as instructions go, as there are some projects where entire chunks of the process are missing or just not explained all that well. A major example of this is the "Owl" on pg. 40. There are two pics of the materials used, and the third pic is the start of the project showing a closeup of the almost finished mask being airbrushed, accompanied by a description to make a cowl to cover the wearer's head and build up the mask from there. No pics of what said cowl is supposed to look like or how to start the project or what to do with the materials shown. The pics just start 3/4s into the project with the assumption you know exactly what went on before. There's a bit more step skipping in other projects, but to memory, this is the only extreme case, hence only 4 stars instead of 5 despite how much I like the rest of the book.

I was looking forward to getting this book based on all the giddy reviews about it...even though the makeups on the cover looked amateurish and suspiciously poorly lit. I wish I had gone with my instincts on this one. Most of this stuff is not what I consider makeup. Its cosplay. Seriously...one of the featured "makeups" shows you how to bedazzle a burlap sack and wear it over your head.Even the basics presented here I would have to say are misguided. For instance, it tells you to paint straight black into wax or putty scratches to give the appearance of deeper wounds. Really? That's what I used to do when I first started and didn't know any better.In my opinion Debrecini's book is the best book on the market right now, Savini's books will give you more insight about ingenuity and artistry, and Dick Smith's Monster Makeup Handbook will continue to be pulled from my shelf a thousand times more than I will ever refer to this dog turd of a book.

I own several books and DVD's on special effects make-up including both of the Grande Illusion books, Movie FX Magazine Master classes, books by Vincent Kehoe, Thurston James and more... and let me tell you this one book covers more ground then any of them. Everything from basic eyeliner and blush to full head latex appliances, costumes, props and metalwork. It has dozens of projects for you to follow along with to create some breathtaking effects.Now that isn't to say that this is perfect, the first and most obvious problem isn't really any fault of the original authors - but the copy I got from amazon has several mistakes and printing errors. But even with these errors the book is still very easy to follow.Other problems might be that some of the information might have gaps as suggested by another reviewer... it is hard for me to tell because I have studied this subject so much that I can fill in the blanks without really thinking.If you are on the fence about buying this book don't be, it is in full color with amazing full page artwork of the finished designs and step by step photos of everything. This book even answered questions some "professionals" I asked could not! For the money this book is very, VERY hard to beat.Now if only someone would put out a book this detailed about animatronics!

Got this for my husband. he has been in special effects and makeup for a few years. Excellent read, great pictures, and even how-tos! A must buy for anyone interested in this line of work, or even just hobbyists who love this kind of thing. Plus, the pictures are incredible and some of the work is mind-blowing!

A really beautiful book. I got it to learn about special fx makeup, but it also includes a brief section on basic beauty makeup. However, its true amazingness is in the colorful, detailed photos of the prosthetics being created and applied, proving to the world that this is a true art form that takes dedication and talent.Admittedly, a few of its explanations aren't as detailed as I would like, and i think it's more of a showcase of beautiful work than a serious text for instruction in sfx makeup. but I still love it and am glad I have it. I wouldn't say it takes the place of hands-on studio instruction, but it's great for inspiration.

This book is great it covers a lot of information in one book that is not always covered in other such books. The molding and casting, acrylic teeth, all kinds of cool crafting and fabrication for effects industry characters. I recommend that anyone wanting to get into Make-up effects grab this book. It is well done and has quite a bit of tech info.The photos are high quality this book is worth the investment. This along with a few other texts could possibly help you launch your career as a beginner in the special make-up effects industry. Be sure to seek out other information on the subject as well to give you a well rounded starting point. Dick Smith, Richard Corson, Tom Savini, and a handful of other wonderful texts on the subject matters. The make-up industry secrets have come out, and this current books contributes to the body of that information. With updates on techniques and materials available.Great book great starting point.

Enjoyed playing this book and I learned every exercise along with the play along CD- a few examples are pretty fast and fairly difficult- I was using the two finger method for the right hand so not sure if the faster exercises would have been easier with a pick. Nice quality book that will help you get started and feeling good about playing the bass, which is a fun instrument! i bought the Bass Songbook #1 and am planning to buy the Bass Book #2.

A good primer for aspiring bass players; this book contains the building blocks of knowledge and provides practice [with CD]; it is useful for new bass players and for experienced bass players who want to understand music notation. Also a good book to use for instructing others.

I borrowed the first 'method' book in the series, "FastTrack Bass", from the library and I liked it so well that I decided to buy the "Songbook1". I like the tune selection and the CD is great to play along with. Unlike the first book with its' many exercises and examples, this volume has only full length tunes. After I have these down pat I'll no doubt go for "Songbook2".

I am an absolute beginner and I finished FastTrack Bass instruction book 1 so I wanted to try some other songs. I have played three of the songs in this book with my wife who plays guitar and we have alot of fun. I recommend this series of books to beginners; I think they get you up and playing quickly. I still need a lot of practice and I have only been playing for two months but playing these songs is a real boost of encouragement. After playing these I have ordered all of the rest of the FastTrack books.
