The Guide for the Perplexed

From the Back Cover

This is the full, unabridged text of one of the greatest philosophic works of all time. Written by a 12th- century thinker who was equally active as an original philosopher and as a Biblical and Talmudic scholar, it is both a classic of great historical importance and a work of living significance today. The Guide for the Perplexed was written for scholars who were bewildered by the conflict between religion and the scientific and philosophic thought of the day. It is concerned, basically, with finding a concord between the religion of the Old Testament and its commentaries, and Aristotelian philosophy. After analyzing the ideas of the Old Testament by means of "homonyms," Maimonides examines other reconciliations of religion and philosophy (the Moslem rationalists) and then proposes his own resolution with contemporary Aristotelianism. The Guide for the Perplexed was at once recognized as a masterwork, and it strongly influenced Jewish, Christian, and Moslem thought of the Middle Ages. It is necessary reading for any full comprehension of the thought of such scholastics as Aquinas and Scotus, and indispensable for everyone interested in the Middle Ages, Judaism, medieval philosophy, or the larger problems which Maimonides discusses.

While this edition is not strictly perfect, I can't help but award five stars to it, for the following reasons:I) it's Maimonides' "Guide of the Perplexed", I mean, the very fact a contemporary edition of this rare and wise work exists is praiseworthy; this translation from Arabic is, on my opinion, very readable (I remind you that works from peripatetic philosophers usually aren't so).II) lack of footnotes: the mutilation of footnotes from the first edition (that was done to condense the original three volumes into this single one) may hurt to us who like references, but I admit that this lacking makes reading this great book a lot more challenging, and thus, we are obliged to learn the subtleties of Maimonides by ourselves rather than simply expecting the translator to give us the answer, and most certainly that was the author's intention. So the edition becomes a hardcore reading, where the reader must really use his mind to solve difficulties and obscurities and look up in literature the references which Maimonides is using.III) the auxiliary parts of the edition are indeed very good, such as the small biography given and an account of the manuscript tradition, not to mention a brief analysis of the work. A final index of recurring passages of Scripture and quotations is also helpful. It must be said, however, that this edition is a republishing from a 1904 edition, and thus there are several typos, mostly in reference to Biblical passages. While it is frustrating to open your Bible, look up the indicated chapter and only then discover the passage was taken from another chapter, I consider this a minor issue. The worst part is the small typeface, of course.About the teachings contained here, I can only say they are undoubtedly clever solutions by one the finest philosophers from the Middle Ages. The work is deep in its lessons and is another brilliant proof and sonorous voice showing us that it's the Middle Ages, not the Renaissance, nor Modernity, the era where reason and faith were found together. This is enough to tell about the work, and more than it I can't say, as you will probably observe after you start reading the book. All that said, I highly recommend this book to those who are really interested in philosophy, that is, those who are indeed in a quest for truth.

I have purchased other translations of this seminal work by the great rabbi and philosopher, Maimonides and found the text difficult to follow at times. The two volume edition is a welcome improvement as the translation makes the content easier to connect with and understand and therefore more enjoyable to explore. The thoughts and ideas behind the words are very deep and numerous sources are referenced by Maimonides including Greek philosophers so this is not an easy read by any stretch. The wisdom and depth of the author is vast and so I found myself re-reading portions of the text each time gaining additional insights. If you want to explore the wisdom of Maimonides, pay the extra fee for this translation as it is well worth it.

In Leo Strauss' helpful introduction he writes that "the teaching of the Guide is then neither entirely public or speculative nor is it entirely secret or exegetic. For this reason the plan of the Guide is neither entirely obscure nor entirely clear." After struggling with Volume One for several weeks, I can certainly attest to this sentiment that the themes are neither "entirely obscure nor entirely clear."The first 1/3 of Volume One seems initially straightforward and is primarily focused with a linguistic interpretation of the Torah in order to show that much of the biblical text is best understood metaphorically rather than literally and therefore does not support a belief in the corporeality of God. For example, the biblical text which states that God created man "in his image" according to Maimonides is not meant to connote that God has either "shape or configuration" and therefore is corporeal, but rather is best translated to mean that God created man in his "likeness" reflecting man's "intellectual apprehension" as the divine link with a creator. Similarly, Maimonides writes that the biblical text which states "My face shall not be seen" does not suggest a literal "face" of God but highlights that the Hebrew word for "face" is typically used figuratively and therefore the correct interpretation of the face of God is that "God's existence as it veritably is cannot be grasped." Although I found this part of the Guide to be illuminating, the rest of Volume One seemed to be a scattered series of disconnected biblical insights from the necessary characteristics needed to attain "human perfection" to demonstrating that God can only be described through negation, with the last 1/3 of the text dedicated to a refutation of Mutakallimun. According to Strauss, this lack of clarity is deliberate since the "secrets of the Law in not a public but a secret explanation" and therefore "the secret teachings are not presented in an orderly fashion but are scattered throughout the book." He also suggests that Volume Two is more straightforward than Volume One.Despite being somewhat more "perplexed" than before reading the book, I'm fairly certain that any inability to derive more meaning is likely due to my own shortcomings rather than a lack of thoroughness or insight on the part of the text.

This book speaks for itself. The translation is excellent and the introductions (there are two) are the best I have ever read in any type of book. The book is worth buying for the introductions alone. Maimonides is not for the faint of heart nor should it be the first philosophical book a person reads. The more Aristotle and Torah you know the better but everyone needs to learn somewhere and Maimonides is the master. His language is archaic but can be mastered as you learn his system of thought. Good luck and may G-d bless you in this endeavor.

The writting itself is very good. A classic. But this edition is not fit to be sold. The print is about 5pt type and it is almost 400 pages. Give me 800 pages that I CAN SEE. I wish I had read the other review about the small type. If I hadn't seen it myself I would never had believed a publisher would do such a thing. I am going to ask for my money back. I was looking foward to reading a classic of Religious Studies, but the small print has taken all the joy out of it. I will try to find a better edition. Do NOT buy this one!

To the Lord Grey series. Personally, I had never heard about this particular incident, and this was very interesting. It was great to see the Highlanders win with such spectacular success! I've borrowed more Lord Grey novellas until I can find a copy of the next Big Book. The end of this novella has a bibliography of all DG's writing, this is worth it just for this...except DG uses the word "berserker" which is one of my favorite words. I would have given this five stars, but it was too short. I truly prefer her Big Books.

I'm a Lord John fan. I admit it and embrace it. So I was thrilled to find this novella about his adventures into the Canadian wilderness to stand up for his friend (but also to get out of England for a bit following a duel that went awry). It was nearly the perfect length for a recent flight, and took me right into the Outlander universe as well.I won't waste time recounting the entire plot, other than to say Lord John finds it expedient to get out of town and when he's asked to stand up for his friend, he takes it. Once he's made it to Canada, however, he finds his cousin's husband has disappeared...after creating his own second family with a Native American woman. Lord John is nothing if not a beacon of integrity, and he does his best to set things right in this regard, and ends up taking part in a British raid on a French fort (which also involves Simon Fraser). If you are looking for a happy, upbeat slice of Lord John's life, this isn't it, but it is gritty and real. There's a lot packed into the novella, and while it doesn't really illuminate more of the overall story, it's an excellent glimpse into what Lord John stands for and it strengthens the backstory of his life in general. I love how Gabaldon has given us a hero, although one with many secrets, who stays true to himself as best he can in any circumstance in which he finds himself. This novella will keep you engrossed with its wry humor and believable twists. Recommended.

I read the Lord John Grey series while waiting for Book 9 of the Outlander series to be written and released. The writing of the LJG books is good, but I'm really not into this series too much. Much less character development, not really into the characters, not really into the military theme, they don't tell me the things I want to know about LJG which makes them fall short of the expectations I had when I purchased them. For instance, I want to know the things which relate to the Outlander series. Things such as events leading up to his marriage, his marriage, raising William, living in America---all the details which don't quite fit into the Outlander series per se, since those are Claire and Jamie's stories.Maybe I was spoiled by the ~early~ Outlander Novellas which seemed to 'fill in the blanks', so to speak, on characters related to the Outlander series--the secrets about Roger's parents, Comte St. Germaine, Geillis Duncan, Ian and Jenny's son, Loaghaire's daughter, Joan. The early novellas left me wanting to know more about these characters. This series...not so much. I just wanted them to end.

I think Diana Gabaldon is one of the best writers I have read. I like the Lord John novellas as a way to get me through to the next Outlander Novel. I try to be patient in waiting for the next novel and I understand it takes great research, perserverence and time to write such great novels, so I am grateful for the novellas in the in-between time.Lord John is a character we met in the Outlander series. He is a man of different tastes and I would not have chosen him to spotlight in the novellas. That being said, after reading several of the novellas about him, he has grown on me. He has shown himself to be heroic, considerate, merciful and have great integrity. So yes, I like him. Thanks Diana for showing that side of him more clearly.I would recommend the Lord John novellas.

...gawd I adore Diana Gabaldon. She just never fails to deliver! I've read all of her Novels/Novella's and all I can say is her writings always propel me to another time...they surround, engulf and envelop me.This story had me laughing out loud at the beginning. I'm not sure if this is Ms. G's intention, but it was so humorous to me to envision these party-goer's purposely electrocuting themselves with an EEL! So I'm sittin' here reading this with a huge, stupid grin...crackin' up... Ms. "G" describes John Grey's experience with the eel so precise and exact and even though it was a serious moment, it had me in stitches. I could feel what these people were experiencing being voluntarily shocked off their feet by an eel! Hilarious....Ms. G is just that good.Lord John Grey is a patient man who does not act impulsively. He's been a Soldier (Lieutenant Colonel) in the British Army all of his adult life. He thinks before acting and does not panic easily (if at all). Above all else, he is honorable and noble to a fault. This story lends more insight to the person of Lord John Grey and a small portion of his life experiences. This story takes place in 1759, as Lord John travels to give witness to the character of a friend in Canada who is facing court martial for failing to suppress a mutiny.I love John Grey's character and I must confess, this emotion surprises me as I didn't like him much at first (his introduction in the "Outlander" Series...but he's weaseled his way forever into my heart). He's a good man...always consistent, always follows the rules..(.well, almost always..heheh..), while keeping his homosexuality lifestyle hidden and protected. He sacrifices so much of himself for his family and close friends.Always in Lord Johns life does he face seemingly insurmountable challenges and usually those challenges include life (and career) threatening dangers. He's always forced to analyze, consider and weigh those dangers against traveling a road less dangerous (but usually is forced into the most dangerous path), in order to achieve his mission...whatever it may be.. This story takes the reader into another thread of John Grey's life...the Battle of Quebec and more.Because there's very little dialogue in this story and a LOT of descriptive detailed foundation, it has the potential of becoming tedious to the reader who has never read D.G before. But press on and you won't be disappointed. I never expected John Grey's character to become so interestingly fascinating to me. He's taken me by surprise.

Beware that the edition published by A.R.N. Publications in 2014, does not have a table of content, or any other hyperlinks for that matter. I do not recommend this edition.By the other edition by the same translator (Meikeljohn) at the same price which does have hyperlinked table of contents.

We are in 1781, Kant is defining the bounds of human reason. He uses concepts from physics (space and time) and the existence of a supreme being (god) to highlight the upper bound of pure reason. He even constructed three proofs ontological, cartesian and cosmological to show that the existence of a creator cannot be discussed using the system of pure reason. The most thrilling part is the comparison of reasoning tools used by mathematics and philosophy. But he is mostly boring and prolix; Voltaire and Nietzsche were rebelling from this prolix tradition? Anyway, this book will test both your persistence and reasoning capabilities to their limits.

Long read, but informative.

This review is for the Angelnook Publishing Book.I loaned out my old copy and never got it back, so just bought a new copy....does that tell you how much I like this book?I've read my share of these type of books, and this one is at the top of my list with Angelnook Publishing Books! If you believe that changing your thinking will change your life, that we can control our thoughts and by doing so improve our over all circumstances, you'll find this book extremely helpful.I must say one of my favorite books on this topic, I was very very surprised with this book. The book and chapter selection is nice and WAY more than I ever expected. I definitely did not expect to find such book treasure.I would recommend it for anyone.

if you really want to know how to raise you conscious awareness of who you really are this is the book. it is easy to read and understand. ultimately the principles of lent must become a way of life.
