"Majestic, rib-tickling, and timeless....These churchless homilies are the gift of innocence wrapped in wisdom, crafted by a superb writer." - "Paul Hawken, Blessed Unrest Review "The world's future depends on this consciousness and you will find it shining forth from every page in this book." - Brother David Steindl-Rast, Benedictine Monk Review "This is the book for everyone who is allergic to what often passes for Chistianity, but attracted to Jesus...beautifully written, as always with Mr. Duncan, but also wonderfully, humorously, deeply felt." - Bill McKibben, The End of Nature Review "If the essence of religion is to bind together, David James Duncan's wise, eloquent, and humorous churchless sermons are deeply religious. God, I think, likes them too." - David Orr, Last Refuge

Full disclosure: 1) David James Duncan's fiction makes him among my favorite authors; 2) I'm agnostic, and have never been a Christian. Therefore, I was poised to like this book by a great writer, but I was a little skeptical of his religious viewpoints.I shouldn't have been - It turns out that, although Jesus is fundamental to Duncan's cosmology, his spiritual and philosophical views are accessible from those of diverse faiths (i.e., me). Duncan speaks honestly and passionately about his personal faith life - about his doubts, about eschewing the religious tradition he was raised in, and about creating a meaningful relationship between his God and the world around him. And, as always, he does it with a great sense of humor. As in his other fiction and non-fiction works, Duncan espouses a love of nature and ecology, especially of the Pacific Northwest salmon streams. His passion for the world of God's creation, and for all living things, drives his faith and the two together drive his life's decisions. I, too, could be considered "an environmentalist" - I work in the field of natural resources - but I lack the fervor that David James Duncan has, both personally and professionally. Whether I read this book all the way through, or pick it up to read an essay here and there, Duncan's intensity inspires me to think anew about my own actions and beliefs. These essays make me question and examine my own (dis-)beliefs, and help to guide my ethical decision-making.I wholeheartedly recommend this book for anyone who likes God, fish, trees, humanity, clean air and water, or funny stories. I also recommend it for anyone who isn't sure if they like any of those - D.J. Duncan provides compelling arguments without seeming to argue, and even if he hasn't completely convinced me, he's at least made me think about things in a new light.
...and has yet to let me down. With honesty like this, how can he?This collection is similar along the lines of _My Story..._ but you gotta know that the teachings of Christ and ALL the rest have been hijacked over time to serve the few and to rake in the dough. Duncan does not hold back his punches one bit and in particular explains the hipocracy handily w/ his lively debate with the woman in "Agony & Hilarity." "They" will only defend what they can invent to serve their perspective be it antiabortionism, antihomosexualism or bombing the hell out of indigenous folks who worship Allah (the same God as theirs, by the way). Anyway the example concerns a debate with an animal rights whack-job over catching and releasing fish. Sheesh...Rodney King is very useful here with his plea.I've read all of Duncan starting with "Why"...have given "Teeth" out as gifts to 20 people and this book is no exception. If you are happy with your church politicizing your religion then read this book (he he)Bill
I am presently reading Brothers K at long last, and River Why has been my favorite novel since the age of 12. I read "God Laughs and Plays" like a starving man eats a steak. Twenty years after River Why, Duncan, in all his travels, musings, lost fish, lost time, lost loves, general quirkiness, whatever... is still gripped by wonder. Duncan's voice is that of clean water, a child's joy. This is an imperfect book, not every chapter is perfect. But the majority are mind-blowing, challenging, beautiful constructions that are not to be missed. This is a man who in his 50's finds joy in the same places my 4-year old does... in the dirt, wet-wading, being seized by some new incarnation of holiness. This is a dangerous book... Thank God.
This is such a unique book as to defy comparison. Duncan is a courageous writer who is not afraid to express his opinions no matter how problematic they may be. However, his voice is well worth hearing. The very personal parts toward the end of the book are worth the entire book. I was left with the strong desire to meet the author and ergage in a face- to- face conversation with him. A thought-provoking work. well worth your time and modest price.
Some twists and turns, some profound thoughts, and some (IMHO) banal observations and assessments which bordered on childish. Still the really good parts are really good.
I should start by saying that David James Duncan is one of my favorite authors. I have read everything he's written, even taking the time to find back-issues of the Sun to read some of his more obscure essays. I find him inspiring, insightful, and generally a master of prose. On the time I had the opportunity to meet Duncan, I found him as likable in person as he is on the page. That said, I have been disappointed in this latest collection of essays. The first problem I found is that the majority of these pieces have appeared elsewhere. While it is convenient to have them grouped together, I found the book to be a bit short on original work. The second disappointment I faced is that while I agree with nearly all the sentiments Duncan puts forth, I find most of the book to be too didactic. Duncan's "sermons" in his past work have always been effective because, like all good sermons, they imparted their ideals through stories. God Laughs and Plays is more of a rant than a story. Even if, like me, you agree with the purpose of the rant, it lacks the essential "Duncan'ness" that his readers expect. That said, there are some true previously unpublished gems in this work. When I heard Duncan talk, he recounted the story of how fly-fisherman aren't haters of fish, but really mayfly preservationists. It is a beautiful and clever anecdote, and I'm glad it's finally made it into print.God Laughs & Plays falls a bit outside of what his fans have come to expect, and leads Duncan into a genre where he hasn't quite become an expert. But, for lovers of Duncan, and those interested in the politics of fundamentalism, it contains enough gems to justify a read.
Church of the River - YES!!!
Great book, but I bought it used. The comments didn't let me know that there was a lot of writing in the margins and underlining in this copy.
