Great for anyone looking to get a PhD in Mathematics. I majored in mathematics at a small university, and was fearful I wouldn't do well in the Math Subject GRE because of the small department I came from. This book offers great examples and helps to expand your knowledge and refresh your memory before the test. The Math Subject GRE may seem daunting and at times impossible to study for, but GET THIS BOOK, as well as other study materials, and you will do great!Pros:Great ExamplesExcellent RefresherCons:Not Enough, Study other things as well
There are lots of little typos, they trip you up for a second and then you realize that they literally typed the wrong numbers. However there are less benign problems too - for example on page 240 it says that for ANY group homomorphism the order of a finite element is the same as the order of its image under the homomorphism, but this is straight up FALSE. It's true for the injective case, and otherwise the best you can say is that the order of the image divides the order of the element. This is an atrocious lie about basic group theory, and leads you to incorrect answers when doing the practice problems. Who knows how many other nontrivial typos there are?
This is book is basically a crash course on undergrad mathematics and then some practice tests. The practice problems at the end of each chapter we're nothing like the practice tests nor the real test.You would be much better off finding practice tests on the internet and using your textbooks from your classes if you get stuck.
Nice review, especially in linear algebra and calculus.Three things that could be possibly improved in the future:1. Maybe there should be more practice tests.2. There should be more materials in abstract algebra, especially theory of rings. Also, group theory is not limited to classification and numbering finite Abel groups as the book might indicate. Be careful.3. Also, the real analysis part...Lebesgue integration is nice, while you still have to know things in a typical one-year undergrad analysis sequence.
It's a good review book. The review sections, definitions, and explanations of the answers are extremely helpful. However, there are some explanations that are hard to understand.For example, in the Pre-Calculus sections at the beginning of the book, it uses the sum of roots theorem to solve a problem. I found it much easier to set both equations equal to each other, simplify them, and then set the non-square root parts of both equations equal to each other solve for B in terms of b.
This book was okay I guess. In the end I felt a little bit like this book was not as helpful as it could have been. Most of the practice problems in the actual chapters are in a written response format, not a multiple choice format. Also, I would agree with the claim that most of the problems in the book are simpler than those found on the actual test. If you already know the math concepts and need help with taking the test (i.e. time management, guessing strategies....etc.), this book will only be marginally helpful. I got a good enough score to seemingly get into graduate school, so I will be okay, but I was disappointed that the book did not give me a lot of help on taking the actual test.
This book really helped me prepare for the GRE. The chapters are easy to follow and there are a plethora of questions to do
