My dad has always enjoyed reading but since his dementia has progressed, he gets frustrated because he can't remember anything he read once he sets a book down. These stories are short enough he can finish one in a single sitting. Problem solved. He's reading again and enjoying it. I already bought him the next volume.

This is a collection of stories of the old American West. All are stories with a moral that emphasizes social, if not legal, justice. I believe the collection to be very good for learners of English. This is straightforward storytelling in the oral tradition. There is little meaning beyond the expressed surface meaning and no deeply disguised nuances. It is safe for all ages; no parental supervision needed. Cultural references (for foreign language learners) are easily interpreted from context. Stories are told from the perspectives of farmers, ranchers, gunslingers, Indians, women, the educated and the lesser educated. Because it is a collection of short stories (the longest one is the next-to-the-last-one) the reader will not feel forced to complete it in more than one reading. I found it to be a pleasant addition to a collection of books I was reading at the same time. I was able to bounce between genres and not lose interest in this work.

Never read much, in fact little as a child and as an adult. I would either not be interested or would go to sleep after a couple of pages. I now have most of the L'Amours frontier and western short stories and have finished cover to cover about three of the volumes. They are exciting and the writer keeps you excited and you don't want to lay the book down. I wish that there were ten stars and I would give a ten plus.

I am amazed at myself for loving all the stories written by this incredible author. My normal reading includes historical/romance/suspense or modern romance/suspense/thriller stories. I assumed L'Amour wrote for men which, of course, he does as well. But these are universal, timeless treasures capturing a time of great drama and struggle which was an important part if the birth of the nation.. His writing style is unique and very well suited to the storylines. It is minimalism which has such power and depth that I am constantly in awe. I like everything he writes but I prefer his short stories.

I just like Louis L'amour stories. There is a simplicity to them that is a joy to read. Louis L'amour is a story teller and that is what you sometimes with a good story. The characters are either good or bad. Sometimes they start off bad but come to that fork in the road where they have to decide what they are going to do ride away from their life or continue on with the life of a bad man. Most chose unwisely and pay for their misdeeds and other just lose out to the better man. If you enjoy stories of men and women make a place for themselves and those who follow them. Then I recommend this book. True you may have read some of these stories before, but it doesn't hurt to read them again. It is like seeing an friend you haven't seen in awhile.

For me, Louis Lamour is the end-all of western writers. His stories are riveting, resulting in a consistent suspension of disbelief. The theater of the mind is actively involved when reading his stories. You picture yourself there and involved up to your maximum involvement. It is a real let down when you put his stories down and realize you are back in your real world. I would recommend his stories for everyone. And you can let your older children read them without worrying what the stories will do to their tender psyche.

This is the fourth book I've read by Louis L'Amour. All are great (see my reviews). INMO Louis L'Amour is the best Western author. As of 2003 he was the only author to receive both the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Congressional Gold Metal. He has 120 books in print. A true master author. Sadly he passed away from lung cancer.This book is fantastic.! 34 short stories and one longer story. 32 of the short stories were 5 stars. The longer story Rustler Round Up was about 100 pages/ 9 chapters and was 5 stars plus plus. One of the short stories was OK with 3 stars. The last story The Moon of the Trees I didn't care for that much 2 1/2 to 3 stars. No one likes everything. Whats incredible is that 95% of the book was wonderful. Such consistent great writing. Great character development, great nature scenes and description of the wild west. Lots and lots of action. No dull parts. Lots of gunfighting, fist fighting, cowboy ranching, gold prospecting, lust for gold and trying to get the pretty girl. L'Amour writes it all!If you like the wild west, cowboy action, lots of western action and great plots this is the book for you. I loved this book so much I bought the second volume and will start to read it now. If I like that maybe get the third volume etc.4 for 4 reading great books by Louis L'Amour. This is a great book to read a story or two while waiting on an oil change or waiting at the doctor or dentist office. The book reading flies and you feel you are in the wild west. Highly recommended 5 stars and great for our family library.

The Life of Helen Keller Doreen Rappaport, illus. by Matt Tavares. Disney-Hyperion, $17.99 (48p) ISBN 978-0-7868-0890-8 Punctuating the narrative with excerpts from Keller's own writing, Rappaport and Tavares, previously paired on Jack's Path of Courage, take a sweeping approach to their picture book biography, beginning when Keller was a healthy baby ("The beginning of my life was simple and much like every other little life") and ending with her death at 87, when she had long been a national icon and social activist ("my love for America is not blind. Perhaps I am more conscious of her faults because I love her so deeply"). While Annie Sullivan remains a pivotal figure (many key scenes from The Miracle Worker are replayed), it's refreshing to see Keller granted a greater sense of agency, even if the book leans toward hagiography. There is one exception: a single image that appears right before Sullivan's arrival, in which Helen's mother struggles to comfort her writhing, disconsolate daughter. Dark and almost demonic, it conveys instantly both the catastrophic nature of Helen's disabilities and the steely will that raged to be unleashed. Helen Keller's story is fascinating, moving, and inspiring. I've read this twice with my 8 year old granddaughter and know that she will ask for it again and again. She was reluctant the first time because it "sounded boring." However, the book gave us oodles of opportunity to talk about what was happening to Helen, how difficult it must have been, what it would be like to be blind or deaf ourselves. We had some terrific conversations. She really absorbed it. I found "The Miracle Worker" movie on t.v. a few days later and we watched it together. That really brought home the emotional and physical realities of Helen's early life. (Caution: I'd forgotten Annie's back story--living in an asylum as a child with her brother, who died in the asylum. These scenes can be disturbing to children. I was able to skip lightly over the explanations of what was going on.)I love that the title of the book is in braille on the cover, that quotes from Helen occur frequently so we "hear" her own words, that the sign language alphabet is illustrated at the back, and that the book covers her whole life. She was an indomitable, incredibly talented woman. A worthy role model for all children.

Every time we drive through the center of Feeding Hills, MA, our youngest grandkids notice the sculpture on the commons that depicts Helen Keller learning about “water.” Recently we told them about Helen Keller and her teacher Anne Sullivan, who was born in Feeding Hills. They were fascinated with how Anne was able to teach Helen to read and speak. So we bought the book Helen’s Big World and brought it to the little park so we could all look at the sculpture and read the book together. (A video of the book is also available for free on Amazon Prime Video, but we love reading actual hard cover books😊)

The most beautiful book written about Helen Keller for children!!! Very sensitive, very well versed, and consistently aware of the times she lived in. A very moving children's book that is very helpful to show how thankful we are for Helen Keller and the person who helped her so much in her life.

It was one of the lists for my daughter's "Battle of Books" competition for high elementary school graders.

It's wonderful to find a 'kids' book of Helen Keller that goes beyond the "water incident". My 5 year old niece has recently become fascinated by Ms Keller but keeps asking me what happened after she started to learn. I'm SO excited to share this book with her. Also, the artwork is beautiful.

A wonderful book about Helen Keller!

We checked this book out at the library and it sparked our 5 yo girl's imagination and now she wants to know more about Helen Keller. I think it is also helping her learn empathy for others.

I volunteer occasionally to do activities in health care and memory care, and I read it to them. They loved it, and it generated to much conversation.

Brilliant book. My child's behaviour changed 180 degrees without me saying a word - because I changed my outlook on her. This book made my outlook change from "I'm thinking boarding school is the best place for you, where you would be forced into rules and routines and if you don't follow them, there will be consequences", to "i understand that life is tough for you and i'm going to help and support wherever i can. i accept that having to spend additional energy on helping and supporting you is part and parcel of who you are, for whatever reason".I was so desperate and ready to give up on my child emotionally, that i googled "how to parent a defiant child" - and couldn't believe my eyes when i found the book titled "10 Days to a Less Defiant Child"! :) i looked for it on Kindle and the first review suggested that, before i read "10 Days to a Less Defiant Child", i should read "10 Days to a Less Distracted Child", which i then did.

I've read many, many books on ADHD and distractibility (Hallowell/Ratey, Murphy, etc.). While those books supplied much-needed background info -- and I urge you to read them as well -- this book gives you ACTUAL STEPS TO TAKE when -- or before -- you're at wit's end.My creative, intelligent, distractible son has had a lot of the issues described in this book: social interaction, homework trouble, depression and confidence. Although this is a "10-day" program, I urge you to read the entire book first, just to get an overview. It's full of great insight and will help you understand why/how your child learns differently.I"m a "Type A" mom -- a list-maker, neat freak, get-it-done-now person -- and it's literally taken years to understand my son. This book gave me concrete ways to help my child navigate a world that's not set up for his way of approaching things.NOTE: Check out "Right Brained Children in a Left Brained World" as well, if your child is particularly creative and "visual" as well as being distractible.

This book gave me a glimpse into the world of my daughter. So far just being aware of what she is going through allows me to be much more patient, but yet stay firm with her. i can see improvements in areas of her life, especially the quality of her school work, and even though we still have a hard time with home work I can take cues on ways to proceed when the going gets tough.

My only draw back was that it seemed to be geared for ADHD, perhaps I did not read the description well enough prior.

As we started having family meetings to learn about anxiety and do the exercises once/week, my daughter started talking more and more at those meetings and at other times about what's going on for her internally. I think the topics we cover in the meetings are helping normalize her experience, and frame it less as a "problem" and more as "life management". Her anxieties aren't all the type that are explicitly covered in the book, but we're finding it possible to extend the ideas to her stuff, with a little creativity. Working the exercises has helped us open some family discussions of things beyond the book, too. For example, last week we had a great chat about how people talk about anxiety as "worries and fears", but sometimes we'll say we're anxious when we're more overwhelmed than fearful or worried. Is that still anxiety? And do you manage it the same way? I'm so glad we're finally finding a way to talk about these things together, instead of having my daughter withdraw whenever the topic comes up.

I'm sure this is a great book - I thought I read the description but I goofed because this is for older kids - school age kids. Since my daughter is only 3, this book doesn't have much in it I can use to help me right now.I'll keep it and hope I won't need it later!

Our six year old daughter has always been painfully shy in new situations to the point that it can prevent her from engaging in activities. Our first approaches of reassurance, expectation setting, and other suggestions gleaned from internet research never helped; however it only took reading this first chapter of this book to get several simple suggestions that made a huge difference. In fact we haven't read the rest of the book because using these tips (especially the "worry brain" drowning out the "calm brain" concept) we were able to help our daughter manage her anxiety. A month ago she clung to us every morning when we took her to her first grade classroom and had to be peeled off us by the teacher, sometimes in tears. Now she waltzes right in and I have to remind her to give me a kiss goodbye. She still gets shy in new groups, but the paralyzing fear is gone and we have tools to deal with it if it arrives. We may have only read a part of this book but it was money well spent.

The three chapters specializing on the Canticle are especially interesting.I would have liked more on the political and economic background (especially the ascetic/poverty/property theme). There is something about the absence of money and property that helped to "open Francis' hands" to the gifts of God and the universe.

I listened to the audiobook version of this book, and the minute I was finished listening to it the first time, I wanted to listen to it again. I didn't because I have several other audiobooks in my library to listen to, but I really wanted to because it was that good.So Cath is basically me...No really. My name is Katherine (which her's would have been if she wasn't a twin although spelled differently), and the college she's attending sounds a lot like the college I attended (although I went to a private school not a major state university). She is more of a city girl than I am, but that was really a very small facet of her personality as it pertains to the story. And like Cath, I'm a major Harry Potter fan (and let's face it, Simon Snow is pretty similar to Harry Potter). What I'm saying is that I really related to Cath and it took pretty much zero effort to step into her shoes, and that might be part of why I wanted to listen to the story again immediately, because the ending of her story was more what I'd wanted for my life at her age, but I didn't get there.As far as the audiobook goes, I felt the narrator was perfect for Cath's voice. The accent was neutral to my ears (as it should be for a midwestern girl), and while the opposite gender voices weren't spectacular, they also didn't seem like caricatures. The Simon Snow and fanfic sections of the book were narrated by a man with a British accent and it worked well to set those segments apart from the main story. I would definitely recommend this as an audiobook if you enjoy them.Overall I give Fangirl 5 out of 5 stars.

Twin sisters, Cath and Wren, have been inseparable until their freshman year of college when Wren decides she wants to go out on her own. Cath is not only left without her sister, but also her best friend as she embarks on this new journey. She ends up hiding from the world (only attending classes because she has to) and we discover her obsession with Simon and Baz which just so happens to be the Harry Potter series! We become fully invested in Cath’s life. We watch as she comes out of her shell, learns to stand up for herself, creates friendships, and even falls in love.The whole book was perfection. I freaking ADORED it. It was not only super cute, but it felt so REAL. It was easy to connect with Cath, to feel what she was going through, and to completely understand all the crazy emotions that come up especially having gone through it. I loved all the characters and the snippets from the Simon Snow series as well as the Fanfixx. But my favorite part… Levi and Cath!! I’m such a sucker for an adorable love story!Honestly, I wasn’t expecting to love this book as much as I did. It is one that quickly stole my heart and didn’t let go. I will definitely be rereading this again and again!!

I've never given 1/4 stars before, but I've finally settled on a good 3.75 star rating. The first half of the book was a fun take on the life of an introvert geek. I felt it was right up my alley and so easy to read. I did find that the second half dragged more than the first, but was still entertaining overall. My biggest problem with the book is centered around the relations between Cath and her new boyfriend. Cath has a lot of insecurities and anxieties (which could have been addressed a bit more, I think ie. possible medications?) and there was a span of time where her new boyfriend seemed to really be pressuring her to take their relationship to a more physical level. That's fine as long as both parties are in favour of the change, but when I kept reading Cath apologize over and over to her boyfriend for how her discomfort was making her behave around him, and he appeared to be subtly guilting her into more and more...well, that turned me off of him quite a bit. Also, I know I seem to be in the minority on this but I found the descriptions of their first night of (partial) physical intimacy to be really awkward and cheesy! "I want to make an honest woman of his chin" lol Really? And rubbing her face all over his facial features (ear, chin, widow's peak) like a cat with catnip? Perhaps RR wrote it that way on purpose and if so, my apologies but I found myself rolling my eyes quite a bit during that whole scene! I did enjoy the fanfic scenes and look forward to reading Carry On in the near future.

This quaint novel tells the charming story of Cather Avery, a first-year student at the University of Nebraska, a proficient writer of Simon Snow [who is a thinly veiled version of Harry Potter] fan fiction, and a young lady on the cusp of her first oh-wow-golly-gee-willickers romance with a young man—the perfectly sweet and enchanting Levi.Essentially a microcosmic early twenty-first century female Bildungsroman, Fangirl is a light and capricious narrative that acknowledges the challenges of early adulthood (e.g., a mildly bipolar father, an absent and frigid mother, a twin sister—Wren—on the verge of alcoholism). But these issues pale in comparison to Cath’s true dilemma—despite her impressive skill at writing fanfiction, she struggles mightily to create characters and worlds of her own. Rowell subtly mines the young-adult-as-author-of-her-own-life trope as she portrays Cath’s emerging independent identity distinct from her prettier and more socially adept twin sister, but the placid conflicts that arise never create any sort of palpable tension in the novel—at least not from an adult perspective. And maybe that’s as it should be, since this novel is clearly written for adolescents, and it features minimal crossover appeal to a more mature readership.
