The Gnostic gospels don't need my praise, this is a timeless classic, and a very valuable addition to the New Testament. It makes very clear that early Christianity had 2 teachings - one for common people, another (esoteric) for the narrow circle of initiated disciples. "Those who have ears will hear..." - this was the ancient sign of a code language. Some of the things Jesus says in Gnosticon would be better understood by people who are familiar with the concept of karma and some eastern teachings. I enjoyed this book a lot, can't believe I did not read it before.
In all my life I have sought after a loving God. One who above all else worked to better the plight of man. I was active in my church as a younger man, but eventually found that I did not have a connection to the Almighty in that place. The many churches I have known all require that man can only come to God through the church. I read these pages and discovered that God is IN me! Like many other works of man, there are still things I feel to be a wrongness tucked into these pages. But, I have God within me, and reason at my disposal and this collection says that is okay.For a very long time I have been embarrassed to say that I am a Christian because it automatically associated me with the biggest, longest lasting hate group in America's long history. If enough people can have their eyes opened to the Gnostic Gospels, we could leave this legacy of hate behind.
Not what I expected. It only has bits and pieces of each gospel not all of them. Not whast I was, looking for.
Three of the most important follows of Jesus held his teachings sacred beyond what the other disciples heard or could understand. Mary was the first apostle not Peter. In those days women were not equal to men. This Mary was not Jesus's mother but many now believe was his wife, Mary Magdalene. Worth while reading to change consciousness in one's self.
Good translation of "lost" books - it's amazing to see parallels with the canonical books of the New Testament. Thomas sounds a lot like the Gospels of Mark and Matthew. The Gospel of Mary feels the most exotic to me and seems to be suggesting a connection to hermetic beliefs, not to mention a more feminine focus. The Acts of John seems similar to the Gospel of Luke and Acts in its narrative style, yet seem to have some of the theological "flavor" of the Gospel of John.
I give a 90% rating...there are parts that are difficult to read but it gives great insight into what the apostles had done after the death of Jesus
Well after many decades wondering what was in the Gnostic Gospels I decided to read them on my own. I'm no scholar but, those that are believe these are authentic. I believe in the apostles Thomas and John. And Mary Magdeline was there as much as the other disciples according to the other 4 gospels and Acts. Read them and you decide for yourself. Much to think about.
I would have given it 5 stars if all the Gnostic gospels were included. However there are some of the Gnostics that are aren't included so I'm still wondering if there is something more....
