I listened to the audiobook version of this book, and the minute I was finished listening to it the first time, I wanted to listen to it again. I didn't because I have several other audiobooks in my library to listen to, but I really wanted to because it was that good.So Cath is basically me...No really. My name is Katherine (which her's would have been if she wasn't a twin although spelled differently), and the college she's attending sounds a lot like the college I attended (although I went to a private school not a major state university). She is more of a city girl than I am, but that was really a very small facet of her personality as it pertains to the story. And like Cath, I'm a major Harry Potter fan (and let's face it, Simon Snow is pretty similar to Harry Potter). What I'm saying is that I really related to Cath and it took pretty much zero effort to step into her shoes, and that might be part of why I wanted to listen to the story again immediately, because the ending of her story was more what I'd wanted for my life at her age, but I didn't get there.As far as the audiobook goes, I felt the narrator was perfect for Cath's voice. The accent was neutral to my ears (as it should be for a midwestern girl), and while the opposite gender voices weren't spectacular, they also didn't seem like caricatures. The Simon Snow and fanfic sections of the book were narrated by a man with a British accent and it worked well to set those segments apart from the main story. I would definitely recommend this as an audiobook if you enjoy them.Overall I give Fangirl 5 out of 5 stars.

Twin sisters, Cath and Wren, have been inseparable until their freshman year of college when Wren decides she wants to go out on her own. Cath is not only left without her sister, but also her best friend as she embarks on this new journey. She ends up hiding from the world (only attending classes because she has to) and we discover her obsession with Simon and Baz which just so happens to be the Harry Potter series! We become fully invested in Cath’s life. We watch as she comes out of her shell, learns to stand up for herself, creates friendships, and even falls in love.The whole book was perfection. I freaking ADORED it. It was not only super cute, but it felt so REAL. It was easy to connect with Cath, to feel what she was going through, and to completely understand all the crazy emotions that come up especially having gone through it. I loved all the characters and the snippets from the Simon Snow series as well as the Fanfixx. But my favorite part… Levi and Cath!! I’m such a sucker for an adorable love story!Honestly, I wasn’t expecting to love this book as much as I did. It is one that quickly stole my heart and didn’t let go. I will definitely be rereading this again and again!!

I've never given 1/4 stars before, but I've finally settled on a good 3.75 star rating. The first half of the book was a fun take on the life of an introvert geek. I felt it was right up my alley and so easy to read. I did find that the second half dragged more than the first, but was still entertaining overall. My biggest problem with the book is centered around the relations between Cath and her new boyfriend. Cath has a lot of insecurities and anxieties (which could have been addressed a bit more, I think ie. possible medications?) and there was a span of time where her new boyfriend seemed to really be pressuring her to take their relationship to a more physical level. That's fine as long as both parties are in favour of the change, but when I kept reading Cath apologize over and over to her boyfriend for how her discomfort was making her behave around him, and he appeared to be subtly guilting her into more and more...well, that turned me off of him quite a bit. Also, I know I seem to be in the minority on this but I found the descriptions of their first night of (partial) physical intimacy to be really awkward and cheesy! "I want to make an honest woman of his chin" lol Really? And rubbing her face all over his facial features (ear, chin, widow's peak) like a cat with catnip? Perhaps RR wrote it that way on purpose and if so, my apologies but I found myself rolling my eyes quite a bit during that whole scene! I did enjoy the fanfic scenes and look forward to reading Carry On in the near future.

This quaint novel tells the charming story of Cather Avery, a first-year student at the University of Nebraska, a proficient writer of Simon Snow [who is a thinly veiled version of Harry Potter] fan fiction, and a young lady on the cusp of her first oh-wow-golly-gee-willickers romance with a young man—the perfectly sweet and enchanting Levi.Essentially a microcosmic early twenty-first century female Bildungsroman, Fangirl is a light and capricious narrative that acknowledges the challenges of early adulthood (e.g., a mildly bipolar father, an absent and frigid mother, a twin sister—Wren—on the verge of alcoholism). But these issues pale in comparison to Cath’s true dilemma—despite her impressive skill at writing fanfiction, she struggles mightily to create characters and worlds of her own. Rowell subtly mines the young-adult-as-author-of-her-own-life trope as she portrays Cath’s emerging independent identity distinct from her prettier and more socially adept twin sister, but the placid conflicts that arise never create any sort of palpable tension in the novel—at least not from an adult perspective. And maybe that’s as it should be, since this novel is clearly written for adolescents, and it features minimal crossover appeal to a more mature readership.

Hi, as a 24 year old who has been living in New York City for the past 3 years, I found myself dealing with issues of self that I not only had never experienced, but had not even been forewarned of. This book literally changed my life. As a sufferer of Crohn's Disease, which is severely aggravated by negative stress, I was in desperate need of an effective form of handling life's stressors. This is the book that allowed me to understand what mindfulness and meditation practices are all about. Instead of tuning out, open yourself up to that one thing you can focus on and appreciate it for what it is whether it's the sound of your breath or a drive in the country. Very practical advice. My stress has gone down considerably since working mindfulness into my life although I understand it is a lifelong practice.

With how widespread Thích Nhất Hạnh's name is in the new age world, I completely misunderstood who he was and what he taught. Hanh's Miracle of Mindfulness is a series of translated letters from 1968 -- written while exiled from Vietnam -- instructing young monks overseas on meditation. His 'mindfulness' isn't the confusing buzzword it is today, but simply a way to inch towards the Buddhist idea of enlightenment.I expected scam artistry akin to Eckhart Tolle or Deepak Chopra, not legitimate Buddhist teachings. There's still a few lines of woo-woo that don't mean anything (to me, at least), but the majority of Hanh's Buddhist ideas reject the nonsense of religious text and simply want the the reader to be self-aware: Recognize their emotions and the emotions of others; the causes of social strife and personal discomfort; the is-ness of all things.It's a straight, beautiful series of meditations to wash away one's anxieties, starting with the most basic step in meditation: Be conscious of one's breathing. Focus on the act of breathing. Focus on any act one's doing and enjoy it -- walking, doing the dishes, the laundry -- because all moments in life could and should be enjoyable.The book concludes with a useful step-by-step guide on each method of meditation without the letters' contexts -- a great reference for when one needs reminders.Hanh's writing is succinct, and makes the reader feel beautiful without asking for anything in return. Highly recommended.

As a beginning yogi, my practice of meditation has been limited, usually wishing I could hurry through that last part of the session. After reading “The Miracle of Mindfulness” I realize I’ve been blowing off maybe the best part of yoga practice. With a clearer understanding of the meaning and importance of mindfulness, I will be more self-aware and conscious of my actions and surroundings. That’s a powerful lesson to glean from a small but powerful book.

I especially appreciate Hanh's commitment not only to a sitting practice but to an active participation in the life of the world. I found this increased my appreciation of this work.Anyone who meditates, seeks out the spiritual dimension of life, or is searching for a greater sense of meaning to ordinary experience should absolutely read this book. It doesn't take long to read but it takes a lifetime to live out.

My main complaint is that pages 133 and 134 were missing in my copy of the book (the last two pages of part two, chapter five).

First off, I am a librarian who never cared about Milo until I began seeing blurbs about Dangerous in Publisher's Weekly (bimonthly book review magazine for libraries/booksellers). They all raised the issue of the morality of purchasing Dangerous. Is it professionally responsible? Is it censorship not to? (Yes.) As an information professional I have always been very interested in intellectual freedom issues and am a card carrying member of the Freedom to Read Foundation so as soon as my industry colleagues began to tell me how dangerous Dangerous would be, I knew I had to read it as soon as possible. And so I started following Yiannopoulos for literally no other ideological reason.Then the book deal was cancelled by S&S, my immediate reaction was that he would self-publish it anyways. This ended up being true. Despite still having a platform and fan base, the cancellation put a chilling effect on the publicity of the book. Many libraries simply do not purchase self-published material on principle because it has not been professionally reviewed. That decreases access for anyone who is either financially unable to purchase the book on their own, anyone who may not have access to Amazon.com, or anyone who is interested but not committed to buying it. The interested but not committed are the most relevant group here, because hearing someone in their own words is more valuable to learning about them than what other people say about them. Which is exactly why I watched that entire infamous "pedophilia" podcast myself and came to my own conclusion (being: what he said was indeed strange but I followed his logic easily). Both Non-Pedophiles AND Pedophiles still have 1st Amendment rights anyways. I emailed my old Intellectual Freedom & Censorship professor from grad school about the cancellation and her response was that Milo already had a platform so it's not the same type of insidious censorship. I respect this professor but I disagreed with her opinion.I have faced book challenges at my job. People have called for me to be fired whilst rampaging through the library, screaming and beating themselves over a book they allowed their child to read. Censorship sucks and defending the 1st Amendment is hard but ultimately always worth it. It is important to be mindful that censorship can come from both the political right and the political left. It seemed a bit ironic to me that all these alleged advocates of free speech were refusing to get a book called Dangerous because it would be too dangerous for people to read. I ordered the book on July 5, 2017 and read it within 48 hours.Like I said, I have little to no experience with Milo so I fact checked a lot of his statements and citations. I soon found that they were all legitimate and ended up putting 2-3 sociopolitical books on my to-read list. I read rather widely...for example I have read Donald Trump and I plan on reading Hillary Clinton's upcoming book. I'll read anyone's book to gain insight into their mind. Trump was pretty unbearable to read - no matter my view on his politics - the writing was bad. Milo was more invigorating to read than Trump, probably because he is by trade a professional word slinging journalist. I would also recommend reading this entire book in Milo's super-gay voice; it makes the experience all the more enjoyable.My final point is this person that the entire world tells me is an untrustworthy dangerous lunatic is in reality...not that. It is important to note that I would not have known this at all if not for having the opportunity to read his own words in concentrated book format. Shock value Breitbart articles are a different reading experience entirely. I'm not saying I agree with literally all the things Milo Yiannopoulos says or stands for but that doesn't matter. I disagree with many things many writers have to say but it does not mean I will refuse to read them. Dangerous is a decent book and censorship is dangerous.

Dangerous is hysterically funny and well written. I pre-ordered the book out of curiosity, there was so much controversy when Simon and Schuster cancelled the book deal. For god's sake, Simon and Schuster published Snooki Polizzi's (reality tv show Jersey Shore star) book, "A Shore Thing", yet bowed to uproar from one side of the political spectrum over Dangerous? I figured I owed Milo's book a read in the name of free speech, and I am glad I did. Full of biting humor and just the right amount of snark, it gives a hilarious view of the hypocrisy of the "tolerant".

I may not agree with every word Milo says, but this book is absolutely critical in protecting free speech. I had to get this book to see for myself.. Was there some kind of secret truth in this book that a major political party really doesn't want us to see? Why else would they pull a book from a gay Brit?As soon as I started reading I was blown away! Really nothing offensive or "dangerous" per se but it's like a huge chest of truth and wisdom that couldn't have been produced by anyone other than Milo.Liberal or Conservative, whether you agree with the author or not, read this if you are not offended by the truth and if you want to open your mind to a side you were unfamiliar with.

This was a quick read and shorter than it initially appeared because the back section is all links to sources to back up Milo's assertions. I would love to give this to some of my friends' kids, but I doubt they would allow it in their houses as it goes against their ideas and that is not allowed. Even so already I am seeing the seeds of conservative rebellion in their little teenaged selves.I learned about Milo before he was well known. My son who spends lots of time on the internet told me about him. My son is part of the quiet conservative rebellion brewing among young people in our country. He is very quiet about his views because even in a very conservative state any Trump support or conservatism is just not acceptable in public. My state, Utah, went Trump despite every stop being pulled out to prevent his election. I did not know a single open Trump supporter, all of us were underground, and as a result many were shocked he got as many votes as he did despite the whole Evan McMullin fiasco. Over and over I would hear people say they did not know anyone who voted for Trump because anyone who at any point voiced public support would be casigated. The most diehard Trump supporter I know is an illegal Guatemalan. She told me She did not want the USA to become what she left even if she got deported and had to go back. My lawyer, my doctor, my mortgage broker all successful women liked Trump.

As a gay man who has seen not just the gay rights movement but the entire progressive movement hijacked by Marxist regressives, Milo is and has always been a breath of fresh air.By now everyone knows how the left took him down and it was laughably pathetic as usual.In the spirit of a true progressive Milo comes out of the gate swinging. Left and right hooks and jabs of wit, humor, snark and most importantly truth.I've never considered myself alt right but that's the label middle of the road people have been smacked with.Milo comes back from a takedown that would have left most people in hiding.Just like Milo, it's our duty to spread the truth no matter what. All it takes for evil to win is for good people to do nothing.Right now the alt left in all of its hateful, rampaging violence is "resisting"....I'm still not sure what exactly but we must resist also by refusing to back down from these new oppressors. The future of this country and Europe depends on it.Awesome and fabulous as only Milo can be.Recommended.
