Along with her own passion for the Arctic, Janet R. This is a terrific book for anyone interested in the mind of the extreme explorer, or those interested in how our knowledge of the arctic developed. In the early twentieth century Ernest Leffingwell served as a scientist on several expeditions of the arctic (including one so badly managed it seems astonishing that they survived). He was one of the first to explore what is now the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and helped determine that there is no land at the north pole. The book includes excerpts from his journals and many illustrations, including color photographs by the author.
