Review

In breath-taking scope, Daniel Groody has done what we might think impossible, to write something fresh, demanding, and generative on the theme of justice... He reaches beyond Catholic social teaching, cites parallel teaching in other world religions, and focuses upon enfleshed models of risk, obedience, and generosity. --Walter Brueggemann

Every Christian, Protestant or Catholic needs to read this book, a blend of prescriptive social mandates and reflective liturgical ideals. In an age of much confusion, globalized violence and disparity between the rich and poor Groody helps the reader self-reflect while motivating al of us to actually do something for the Kingdom. I'm grateful for his book.

Groody is an engaging writer with much insight. I loved his book and I can't wait to read more books written by him. He challenged me to think outside the box. The seller was prompt in service and the book was in great condition when I received it.

This is an excellent book that gives a comprehensive review of the tradition of Catholic Social Teaching: biblical roots, patristics, development of the body of specific teachings called Catholic Social Teaching, the sacramental basis for living these principles and liberation theology - what it really is. A necessary read and shelf reference for anyone trying to live with social justice in a global world and develop their spirituality for such. Very readable - no jargon.

I find the book very informative and spiritually grounded on scriptures

I used his chapter on liberation theology to explain the concept to my high school class, it was so succinct.

This is a required text for a course I am taking. It is not easy reading and, it proposes positions with which I have philosophical differences. That being said, it is what I needed.

"This book may take our breath away." So states the cover blurb from Walter Brueggemann on "Globalization, Spirituality, and Justice: Navigating the Path to Peace," released on April 17, 2007 by Daniel G. Groody. The basic premise is, metaphorically, that the global family has booked passage and is now aboard the ship of globalization and there is no turning back to the shore. The question we must ask ourselves, as passengers on this ship, is, "who is at the helm and where are we going?" As Gustavo Gutierrez quips, "Being against globalization is like being against electricity." We can't stop the ship, and one would question the wisdom of wanting to, but the issues of who's driving and where will we end up are legitimate. The book begins by offering an overview of the dual nature of globalization--its inherent propensity for good, such as the triumphs of technology, and for ill, such as the tragedy of poverty. Perhaps more importantly, chapter one details where we have sailed on this ship so far. This chapter seeks to give a realistic picture of the world today and paints that picture by using the most current statistics available. These statistics were gathered from sources such as the World Bank, the United Nations annual Human Development and World Development reports, and the World Institute for Development Economic Research. It is staggering to learn that 19 percent of the global population lives on less than $1 per day, 48 percent live on less than $2 per day, 75 percent live on less than $10 per day, and, according to the World Bank, two-thirds of the population of the planet lives in poverty. The weight of these income disparities is compounded when one looks at the unequal distribution of wealth and our disordered spending patterns. According to an article in the December 2006 issue of "The Economist," half of all wealth is held by only 2 percent of the world's adults. The world spends almost as much money on toys and games as the poorest 20 percent of the population earns in a year, and four times as much on alcohol as on international development aid. The troubling area of military spending is also addressed. The world picture, from the perspective of poverty and need is indeed bleak, but Professor Groody does not leave us in the grip of its reality with no hope. He is convinced that, while fully aware of the abuses committed in the name of religion throughout history, the gift theology can bring to the process of globalization is a navigation system that has the potential to guide us to a place of solidarity and peace, where if globalization is left to itself or to those leaders who are only motivated by profit we may run aground on the icebergs of greed. As Groody notes, we are doing theological reflection all the time, but he argues that to find a place of human solidarity we must undergo a conversion from "money-theism" to monotheism. The remaining eight chapters of the book deal with how the various sub-disciplines of theology inform the process of globalization.* Chapter two details the core narratives of the Bible--the Narrative of the Empire, the Narrative of the Poor, the Narrative of Yahweh, the Narrative of Idolatry, and the Narrative of the Gospel, integrating them all with the Narrative of the Passover.* Chapter three challenges idolatry and excessive wealth through the words of the early church writers.* Chapter four lays out an overview of Catholic social teaching with an acronym ("A God of Life") that provides a framework on which to hang the basic tenets. There are also several very useful charts that detail the documents of the universal and regional churches by categories of year, author, context, and key concept.* Chapter five consists of a short section (five or six pages) on the basic social teachings of each of the major, non-Judeo-Christian, world religions--Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Bahai Faith, and African Indigenous religions. Here we see that social justice is not unique to Christianity.* In chapter six the lives of five contemporary models of justice are briefly chronicled: Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Jr., Dorothy Day, Mother Teresa, and Oscar Romero. Attention is paid especially to their foundational experiences, the major metaphor of their life, their operative theology, and their core contribution to justice.* Chapter seven reflects on God through the perspective of the poor by looking at liberation theology and the preferential option for the poor. This chapter is an especially helpful read for anyone who wishes to understand what is meant by these two terms and the position of the Vatican on liberation theology. The global perspective is readily apparent again in this chapter as attention is paid to Black, Hispanic, Feminist, and Asian liberation theology.* Chapter eight concerns the rite of the liturgy, and justice as living in right relationships with God, self, others, and the environment. This chapter also has several nice charts that are helpful in linking the sacraments to social teaching by way core issue.* The final chapter on spirituality and transformation beautifully sums up the book by looking to the spiritual disciplines which can strengthen us for doing the work of justice in the world: fasting, prayer, community, solidarity, nature, simplicity, recollection, and Sabbath. Each chapter begins with a relevant story, and ends with a set of questions that would be helpful for personal reflection, group discussion, or classroom use, and a detailed bibliography for further reading and study.I recommend Globalization, Spirituality, and Justice for upper level undergrads and graduate students in theology, peace studies, political science, ethics and justice, and economics and business, as well as justice groups, and the general reader interested in this vital and timely topic. Groody has managed to research and write a compelling treatise on global injustice without conveying a bleak and hopeless message. At its core, this book seeks to respond to the deeper issues of the human heart that globalization has largely left unexplored--questions related to belonging and loneliness, good and evil, peace and division, healing and suffering, meaning and meaninglessness, hope and despair, love and apathy, justice and injustice, freedom and slavery, and ultimately life and death. He is not interested in overwhelming readers with guilt, but rather with guiding readers to examine our personal and corporate lives and motivations, all the while encouraging us to think beyond ourselves to the needs of our brothers and sisters in the global family. The book is clear and well documented, exquisitely written, and sings a wonderful melody of the gratuitousness of God that is both a gift to and a demand on our lives.

Truly excellent work. This book addresses how to be christian in todays world. Thought provoking and very well researched. Great for a book group with discussion questions at the end of each chapter. I have already recommended this book to many.

Review

“Nachman Tal has written a unique book. It elucidates the variety of streams of radical Islam and the modus operandi of Egypt and Jordan in coping with them. Based on his intimate knowledge of the field, Tal’s work is an indispensable source for understanding the relations between the ideology and the strategy of these radical streams.”  —Dr Matti Steinberg, former advisor, Israel’s General Security Service“Nachman Tal’s book presents an extensive review of the rise of violent and non-Islamic groups in Egypt and Jordan. Based on original research and the author’s personal interviews with leading figures in the field, the book is a most impressive collection of information and records, covering both the radical groups themselves and the regimes’ methods of confronting the Islamic threat.”  —Prof. Shaul Mishal, Tel Aviv University, co-author, Investment in Peace: The Politics of Economic Cooperation Between Israel, Jordan and the Palestinians

The best part of the book is the article by Dean Calver on vertex compression. Most of the other material are good practial tricks on shaders plus tutorials. Dean's article not only gives a clever way to compress and decompress vertex position - by concating the model view matrix with his decompression matrix. His use of eigen vectors to find the principal axis is refreshing. He also showed us how to extend the method to handle geometry that are larger and cannot be handled within the precision of the basic method.

great book

This is a very poorly put together book. It's organized as a series of small articles, but the article sizes vary widely and many of them contradict others. ...It definately has some useful information in there, but it's tough to extract through the poor organization and formatting.

When I purchased this book I didn't have any high expectations about the introductory chapter or the vertex shaders chapter but I was really looking forward for the Pixel shaders part and last chapter about engine design. To my disappointment, the book has some serious flaws:1. Nearly all the pixel shader stuff is written for ps1.4 which is only supported by the Radeon8500. Being a GF3 owner, this is very disturbing ....2. The engine design chapters turned out to be 3 very short articles that contain general discussion without getting into engine implementation details.3. The chapter about developing with Shader Studio is totally useless. This information should be in the program's manual and not in the book...4. Some of the articles are written in a "Here's the shader code... go figure it out" style...5. A major portion of the material in this book could be easily found online by going to NVIDIA's or ATI's site and going through the papers and presentations, or reading the stuff in the DirectX SDK, or just using google in the "worst" case where non of the above sources was helpful.6. Lack of common code standard. Some articles use NVIDIA's assembler, some use MS's assembler and some use the DirectX's effects framework. To conclude, this book was a major disappointment to me ...

I read most of the chapters of this book so far and I must say this is the best book I have ever seen on effects programming. It was much easier for me to understand specific techniques by reading a real text instead of flipping through numerous power point slides.Although I have done some work with shaders before, I found Wolfgang's introduction at the beginning of the book very useful. One of my favourite chapters is Dean Calver's chapter "Vertex Decompression in a Shader". Using this technique is a must to save valuable memory bandwidth. I think this chapter alone is worth the money to buy the book. I can't name all the excellent articles here, but I want to highlight a few:Per-Pixel lighting for a skinned mesh is not trivial. You can find a great explanation of this in "Character Animation with Direct3D Vertex Shader" by David Gosselin. Additionally this article shows you how to combine keyframe animation with a skeleton based animation, which might be useful to combine an animated face (keyframe animation) with a skeleton based animation of the body (this seems to be used in a few upcoming games).Kim Pallister explains optimization techniques, that helps you to optimize your shaders so that they run on older hardware. This techiques are also useful on the newest hardware.Jason L. Mitchells chapter on Image processing gives you a lot of ground to think about post-processing shaders, which are useful to get a look like a 50's TV set or to get a heat signature. He shows numerous ways to influence the overall look and feel of your game by using filter, egde detection and mathematical morphollogy. One of the very handy tips is written by Steffen Bendel. He shows how to smooth fonts in a very simple and efficient way on pixel shader hardware. This is very useful for displaying fonts. You can implement this feature in minutes in your engine. Steffen's chapter "Smooth Lighting with ps.1.4" shows one of the most interesting ways to improve lighting quality in a game engine.Kenneth Hurley's chapter "Photorealistic Faces with Vertex and Pixel Shaders" shows step-by-step, how to prepare art in a way, that the result looks photorealistic and it explains each line in the source code needed to produce photo realistic faces with the help of vertex and pixel shaders in real-time. The article comes with the source of the necessary tools (diffuse cube map generator, a texture mapping cylindrical wrapper (MAX Plugin)) and an example program. Kenneth shows how to achieve this effect in 2 passes on multitexturing capable hardware by using sphere maps.Getting into the field of "Non-Photorealistic Rendering with Vertex and Pixel Shaders" is not trivial. Blockbusters like MotoGP, Wreckless, Cel Damage, Jet Set Radio Future show how non-photorealistic rendering can influence the atmosphere in a game. Jason L. Mitchell and Drew Card gives you a detailed explanation on how to do these kind of techniques in real-time.A collection of very useful "Texture Perturbation Effects" is shown by John Isidoro, Guennadi Riguer, and Chris Brennan from ATI. They show how to produce clouds, fire, and glass in a very efficient way in the pixel shader. The chapters on "Rendering Ocean Water", "Rippling Reflective and Refractive Water", "Chrystal/Candy Shader" and "Bubble Shader" show some of the neat tricks used in the ATI nature demo. The example programs didn't make it into the book, but you can get them with source now from the ATI web-site.Another one of my favourite articles is the one written by Philippe Beaudoin and Juan Guardado "A Non-Integer Power Function on the Pixel Shader". This article deals with the lack of color precision on first generation shader hardware. It shows a way how to overcome this problem by using a cool algorithm.Ádám Moravánszky shows how to use bump maps together with BRDF rendering. If you ever thought about implementing this technique, you can see why Ádám is one of the shader wizards.Using 3D textures to store data for games is a technique that is getting more and more common with newer hardware. Evan Hart shows how to use 3D textures in an efficient way in games.Martin Kraus is a member of the Visualization and Interactive Systems Group at the University of Stuttgart in Germany. This group developed a bunch of new techniques in volume graphics. He shows some very nice examples on what you can do with 3D textures on current hardware. It is interesting to read about their advanded techniques to use 3D textures very efficiently. It is not a trivial task to design an efficient graphics engine, that uses shaders to show breath-taking visuals. Ingo Frick the technical director of Massive Development explains in "Visualization with the Krass Engine", how they designed the Krass engine to get an efficient shader implementation. This engine is used in several upcoming european game titles (Aquanox Revelation, Spellforce et all.).The last chapter by Bart Sekura shows, how to build up a complete shader driven graphics engine, that is capable to read in Quake 3 and Return to Castle Wolfenstein levels and to display them. You can find the full source with a thorough explanation in this book.I would like to recommend this book to everyone, who is interested in real-time graphics programming...

Shaders are the direction of real time graphics programming for games and other applications. They were introduced in their first versions with DX8 hardware like the GeForce3 and the Radeon 8500 and are continouisly extended in further version of hardware and software like in the new DX9 class of hardware. It is industry wide consensus that shaders are the way to get cool graphics in realtime games. But there has always been a lack of good documentation about what shaders are and their possibilities. This book was made to address it. It is designed to handle the DX8 API way of shaders together with lots of DX8 samples but the principles apply to OpenGL shader programming also. The book is splittet into two parts. The first part is a thorough introduction about vertex and pixel shaders written by editor Wolfgang Engel. It explains the reasoning behind the shaders, the definitions of the virtual machines, and all assembler commands available. For each type of shaders there is also an introductionary example section for getting first successful shader programs running. It is well written with lots of information. The second part is a collection of shader gems - short articles by differenct authors. Among the authors are people from developer relations from nVidia, Matrox and ATI as well as graphics programmers from inside the gaming industry. These authors have lots of experience programming shaders and they show in short sections what's possible and how to get there. This book is standing in my bookshelf and in the bookshelves of a lot of professional developers worldwide.I highly recommend buying it.

Conformed to the Image of His Son: Reconsidering Paul's Theology of Glory in Romans

Review

"The letters of Paul are notoriously complex. However exciting and stimulating the subject matter, there always seems to be more going on than meets the eye of the casual reader, even of the Christian reader used to hearing sermons and other expositions of well-known texts. It is therefore always worthwhile investigating even the most familiar passages to be sure they have yielded up their secrets. This is what Haley Jacob has done in this remarkable work, and the results are striking. If she is right―and I am convinced that she is―then the standard assumptions about a central Pauline passage will need to be revised. After a lifetime of study and teaching on Romans, I was not expecting to be confronted at my age with a fresh understanding of its central chapter, requiring a radical rethink of many familiar landmarks both exegetical and theological. But that is what Dr. Jacob has achieved. Not everyone will agree with all segments of her argument. But both in its parts and as a whole it has, to my mind, compelling force. I urge all students of Paul and of Romans to work carefully through the step-by-step presentation of the case." (N. T. Wright, research professor of New Testament and early Christianity at the University of St. Andrews, Scotland)"There are so many words in the Bible, like grace and gospel, that are commonly thought to be understood but which, upon closer analysis, are shaped too much by a lack of study. Enter glory. Enter Haley Jacob's examination of glory, and we inherit a study filled with careful analysis, theological sophistication, and practical insights. What is meant by 'conformed to the image of Christ' is now clarified and ready for pastoral and ecclesial exploration. I found this study judicious and insightful at every turn." (Scot McKnight, Julius R. Mantey Professor of New Testament at Northern Seminary)"What is conformity to Christ? Is it participation in him or glorification with him? Haley Jacob contends that Romans 8 presents a functional understanding of glorification as believers' sharing in Christ's benevolent messianic rule and thus in God's care for creation. Resolutely argued and consistently provocative, this significant book will challenge readers of Romans to look afresh at one of its most theologically important themes―and its implications for the life of the church." (Michael J. Gorman, Raymond E. Brown Professor of Biblical Studies and Theology at St. Mary's Seminary & University, Baltimore)"Haley Jacob has taken a text that everyone thought they understood (in one way or another) and has given it the treatment that it deserves. With her help we can see much more clearly how Romans 8:28-29 relates to Paul's larger argument in Romans (and elsewhere). And the result is revolutionary! The destiny Paul has in mind is not merely that of finding ourselves in a luminous splendor, but of the privilege of participating in and extending Christ's rule over all of creation. Jacob's argument should reshape the conversation about the goal of salvation as Paul understood it, and it has the power to reshape the way Christians live out their understanding of salvation in practical ways. Here we find a model of careful scholarship carried out in the service of the church." (Roy E. Ciampa, S. Louis and Ann W. Armstrong Professor of Religion at Samford University)"Haley Jacob presents a powerful and convincing argument that Paul portrays believers as participating in the Son's messianic rule over creation as adopted sons and daughters. What God intended for Adam has now been brought to completion in the Davidic Messiah's glorious reign over creation―an exalted and glorious reign in which Christ the King's people share. This is another noteworthy contribution to the recovery of Jewish messianism as a critical context for Paul's Christology and participatory soteriology!" (Joshua Jipp, associate professor of New Testament at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School)

This is an amazing work of scholarship. The implications for communicating and living out of the gospel are profound. The clarity of God’s purpose for humanity is made clear for the reader: the supremely honorific vocation of participating with Christ in the work of reconciling all things. As stated by NT Wright in the foreword, salvation is not about being rescued out of the world; we are rescued FOR the world to the glory of God in participation with Christ. The grand narrative of Scripture can be read as not merely the regaining of humanity’s innocence, but also one of honor-status reversal in participation with Christ our King. Or, as Dr. Jacob says, a “reglorified humanity.” The Fall was not merely the loss of innocence, but the loss of glory and regal vocation. Christ as the second Adam fulfills with his people what the first Adam could not: the regal and glorious responsibility of dominion and kingdom-building. This book was thrill to read. Thank you, Dr. Jacob.

Very good argument. References other theologians a ton so it’s often hard to tell what her idea is. Other than that super good

Haley Goranson Jacob teaches theology at Whitworth University. This book, Conformed to the Image of His Son, offers a fresh interpretation of Romans 8:29-30.Romans 8:29-30 states: “For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn within a large family. And those whom he predestined he also called; and those whom he called he also justified; and those whom he justified he also glorified.” (NRSV)What does Paul mean when he refers to believers being conformed to the image of God’s Son? Two proposals are prominent. The first view is that believers will be conformed to the image of God’s Son in terms of holiness: they will become like Christ in their moral and spiritual character. The second view is that Paul means that their resurrection bodies will be glorified, shining bright, like Christ’s glorified resurrection body.Although Jacob rejects these interpretations, moral holiness and bodily composition still seem to factor into her scenario. Jacob accepts Colossians as authentically Pauline, and Colossians 3:7-9 presents moral aspects to becoming conformed to the image of God. Paul also depicts believers’ resurrected bodies as new and improved, in possessing immortality, for instance.Jacob argues, however, that Paul has a different focus in Romans 8:29-30. For Jacobs, when Paul affirms that believers will be glorified, he means that they will be honored. And when Paul refers to believers being conformed to the image of God’s Son, he is echoing themes in the Hebrew Bible. There is Genesis 1:26-27, which depicts God’s image as the dominion that human beings have over creation. Jesus is God’s Son in the sense that he is the Messiah, for the Davidic ruler in the Hebrew Bible was called God’s Son. Jacob argues that, for Paul, believers are conformed to the image of God’s Son in that they join Jesus in ruling over a creation that is being renewed. This has future implications, but it has present implications, as well. When Paul in Romans 8:26-27 talks about the Spirit interceding for believers when they pray, Jacob believes that this relates to believers praying for creation, not so much their own personal issues. Jacob translates Romans 8:28 differently from how it is customarily translated. Most translations render it as all things working together for those who love God (Romans 8:28), but Jacob interprets it in terms of believers working with God in the renewal of creation, not so much things clicking in their personal lives. In making her argument, Jacob appeals to a variety of considerations. She examines the usage of doxa (glory) in the Septuagint, highlighting that it often pertains to receiving honor. She considers Paul’s writings broadly, then she looks at Romans, then she closely looks at Romans 8. Jacob sees that Psalms 8 and 110 feature prominently, sometimes explicitly and sometimes implicitly, in Paul’s discussion of the risen Christ. Psalm 8 is about the dominion that human beings have over God’s creation, and Paul contends that Christ now has that as the risen Messiah. Paul interprets Psalm 110 as the Messiah sitting at God’s right hand and ruling. In Jacob’s argument, Paul holds that believers share in this rulership with the risen Christ, for believers’ participation with Christ is a salient feature of Paul’s writings. Jacob also offers a grammatical argument for her interpretation of Romans 8:28.Jacob judiciously engages prior scholarship. The book is interesting in that it highlights the different interpretations that scholars have offered regarding Romans 8 and other Pauline passages, as well as changes in scholarly trends. For example, whereas scholarship used to interpret Paul’s reference to the “Son of God” in light of the sons of God in Greek mythology, Jacob states, it has come to interpret the phrase in light of the Messiah of the Hebrew Bible. While the book is nuanced, Jacob continually stresses her main points, and her introduction and conclusion lucidly summarize her arguments.A slight issue that I have with Jacob’s argument is that, when I read Paul, Paul does not seem to emphasize believers going out and serving the world. One can certainly derive that lesson from the Bible, for the Old Testament talks about giving alms, and the Gospels depict Jesus going into the world and helping people. Paul, however, focuses more on spreading the Gospel and the spiritual care of his congregations. When he talks about helping the poor, he usually (perhaps always) means the poor of the church, not the poor in the world. This is odd, if Jacob’s interpretation of Paul is correct. Still, one cannot dismiss the evidence that she does present, such as the significance of Psalm 8 and 110 in Paul’s writings.I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher. My review is honest.

What exactly does συµµόρφους τῆς εἰκόνος τοῦ υἱοῦ αὐτοῦ (“…conformed to the image of his Son...”) mean within its own literary and theological context? Answering this question is the main project of a new 312 page softback, “Conformed to the Image of His Son: Reconsidering Paul’s Theology of Glory in Romans” penned by Haley Goranson Jacob, assistant professor of theology at Whitworth University in Spokane, Washington. This carefully written scholarly manual methodically weaves its way through Septuagint and Koine Greek, Romans 1-8, and mounds of New Testament researchers to get to its destination. Though it is a highly specialized volume, nevertheless it is manageable for the patient and unflappable non-technical reader as well. After N.T. Wright’s enthusiastic forward to the book, Jacob lays out her program and methodology. She openly places her premise before the reader, which she goes on to rehearse numerous times in every chapter, “conformity in Romans 8:29 refers to a functional conformity; that is, when believers are conformed to the image of the Son, they are conformed to his status and function as the Son of God who rules over creation…I will argue that this…is at the heart of Paul’s meaning…” (10-11). Through the remainder of the volume the author painstakingly unpacks this premise, and ends where she began, but bigger: “I have argued that Romans 8:29b refers to believers’ participation in the Firstborn Son’s rule over creation as God’s eschatological family and as renewed humanity. This rule is the reinstitution of humanity’s dominion over creation as God’s vicegerents, as is narrated in Genesis 1:26-28 and picked up in Psalm 8:5-8. Believers are “conformed to the image of [God’s] Son” on the basis of their adoption into God’s family (Rom 8:14-16) and thus their participation in the Messiah’s Sonship (Rom 8:29c). Adopted Chrildren of God share in the Firstborn Son’s inheritance (Rom 8:17), his possession of and rule over the earth, which is to say that they share in the Son’s glory (Rom 8:17)” (266). It’s a moderate sized book with a big purpose and large import! In the first section of the volume (chapters 2-4) Jacob works her way through the Greek words for glory, glorification, and glorified. While there are times and places where glory can refer to God’s own theophonic splendor, more times than not, kabod and doxa etc. denote God’s status, honor, and identity as king and sovereign. When God’s theophonic splendor is being described by these words, it is a sign of God’s unsurpassed greatness, absolute power, and visual presentation of his status as king. When these words are used with regard to humans, the author shows that only in a few cases does it refer to radiance and splendor. But in the prevailing number of cases, it is speaking of exalted status, honor, authority and rule; “it is almost entirely the case that the glory given to a person (or a person’s glorification) either constitutes or is closely related to the honor, power, wealth, or authority associated with an exalted status of rule (62-3). This conclusion has great significance for Romans 1-8, especially as Paul appears to be drawing from Genesis 1.26-28 as it is reclaimed in Psalm 8; “I will argue here that throughout the letter there is an implied narrative of glory, a narrative that begins with humanity forsaking the glory of God, that is, humanity’s purposed identity and vocation (Rom 1:23; 3:23) and God’s people receiving again the glory of God (Rom 2:7, 10; 5:2; 8:17, 21, 30; 9:23). This narrative of glory forms the heart of the meaning behind Paul’s dense phrase “conformed to the image of [God’s] Son”” (98). Jacob then spends chapter 4 explaining how union with Christ in Romans 8 is an active, participatory union in Christ’s Messianic Sonship and rulership. For me personally, as I came to the end of this section, I was lost thoughtful wonder! The second section of “Conformed to the Image of His Son” (chapters 5-7) tackles, in earnest, Romans 8:29, and precisely in its location in Romans 8. There are thought-provoking surprises in nearly every subsection. One of my favorite conclusions by the author states that physical “redemption for both creation and humanity is a means to a much greater end: freedom to fulfill God’s purpose. Only when God’s children are reinstated to their original throne – their crown of glory and position of dominion over creation as expressed in Psalm 8:5-8 – will the creation be liberated” (241). I came to a similar conclusion in my own book “Gnostic Trends in the Local Church” where I reviewed Irenaeus’s pro-creation Christology that works toward a redeemed, restored and renovated creation.Jacob further shows how, in Romans 8, glorification, just like adoption, has both a “now” and “then” aspect. Glorification has begun, and glorification will come in utter fullness in the resurrection. “Believers are not yet glorified entirely or completely, but they nonetheless participate in the Son’s glory in the present as those whose new identity is established in the Messiah, the Son of God” (250). Therefore, according to Jacob, God’s eschatological family, whom I often call God’s heaven-on-earth people, or his new-heavens-and-new-earth household, are predestined, called, justified and glorified to bring God’s redemption to the κτίσις, the world, creation. The way it is done for now is “in part by action and in part by prayer (Rom 8:26-27)” (Ibid.).A reader may not agree with all of Jacob’s conclusions. I know I find it difficult to completely accept some aspects of her analysis, especially since it would mean that our Bible translations have gotten it wrong for so long. However, time spent in “Conformed to the Image of His Son” is not wasted time! At the very least one will walk away thinking differently about God’s world reclamation project, our role in it, and the whole idea of glorification. This is a volume that needs to be taken up and poured over by pastors, theologians, New Testament scholars, and divinity students. Further, it would make an important addition to seminary and university libraries. If you can read Koine Greek, or if you can tolerate it and thoughtfully stay with the flow of Jacob’s arguments, you will be glad you studied this work. I highly recommend it.My deep thanks goes out to IVP Academic for the volume they sent me at my request and used for this review. They asked nothing more of me other than an honest review. And that is what I have presented to the reader.

Doing Harm: The Truth About How Bad Medicine and Lazy Science Leave Women Dismissed, Misdiagnosed, and Sick, by Maya Dusenbery

Review

“Ever since the centuries of burning women healers as witches, because they taught women how to govern our own bodies, thus to control reproduction—the medical world hasn’t included all of humanity. Doing Harm shows what is left to be done, and directs both women and men toward healing.” (Gloria Steinem)“Maya Dusenbery’s exhaustively researched book is equal parts infuriating and energizing. No woman will see the medical establishment, and perhaps even more profound, her own body, the same way after reading it. In a just world, it would be required reading in medical schools from this day forward.”  (Courtney E. Martin, author of Perfect Girls, Starving Daughters)“Maya Dusenbery brings new life to one of the most urgent yet under-discussed feminist issues of our time. Anyone who cares about women’s health needs to read this book.”  (Jessica Valenti, author of Sex Object)“Dusenbery challenges a new generation of women and practitioners to fight for medical equity—shinning a harsh light on the sex bias that pervades every level of medicine. It’s outrageous that such malignant neglect exists more than two decades after the government acknowledged the gaps in knowledge about women’s health.”  (Leslie Laurence, co-author of Outrageous Practices)“In this groundbreaking book, Maya shows how the same forces that hold women back in society more broadly lead to sub-par medical care and inadequate attention to health issues that impact women. Every doctor, scientist, health care provider and researcher should read this book. And so should every woman.” (Jill Filipovic, author of The H-Spot)“Doing Harm is a deeply researched and very readable exploration of the systematic mistreatment of women in our medical system—and how even those with the best intentions perpetuate it. This book is an eye-opener; may it also be a call for real, sustained change.” (Kate Harding, author of Asking For It and co-editor of Nasty Women)“An intensive, timely spotlight…Within an organized, well-balanced combination of scientific and social research and moving personal stories, Dusenbery makes a convincing case for the need for drastic industry reform and clinical refinement.” (Kirkus )“Dusenbery’s excellent book makes the sexism plaguing women’s health care hard to ignore…skillfully interweaving history, medical studies, current literature, and hard data to produce damning evidence that women wait longer for diagnoses, receive inadequate pain management, and are often told they are imagining symptoms that are taken seriously in men.” (Publishers Weekly, starred review)“Editor’s Choice by the New York Times” (No Source)“As seen on FRESH AIR” (No Source)

From the Back Cover

Editor of the award-winning site Feministing.com, Maya Dusenbery brings together scientific and sociological research, interviews with doctors and researchers, and personal stories from women across the country to provide the first comprehensive, accessible look at how sexism in medicine harms women today. In Doing Harm, Dusenbery explores the deep, systemic problems that underlie women’s experiences of feeling dismissed by the medical system. Women have been discharged from the emergency room mid-heart attack with a prescription for anti-anxiety meds, while others with autoimmune diseases have been labeled “chronic complainers” for years before being properly diagnosed. Women with endometriosis have been told they are just overreacting to “normal” menstrual cramps, while still others have “contested” illnesses like chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia that, dogged by psychosomatic suspicions, have yet to be fully accepted as “real” diseases by the whole of the profession. An eye-opening read for patients and health care providers alike, Doing Harm shows how women suffer because the medical community knows relatively less about their diseases and bodies and too often doesn’t trust their reports of their symptoms. The research community has neglected conditions that disproportionately affect women and paid little attention to biological differences between the sexes in everything from drug metabolism to the disease factors—even the symptoms of a heart attack. Meanwhile, a long history of viewing women as especially prone to “hysteria” reverberates to the present day, leaving women battling against a stereotype that they’re hypochondriacs whose ailments are likely to be “all in their heads.” Offering a clear-eyed explanation of the root causes of this insidious and entrenched bias and laying out its sometimes catastrophic consequences, Doing Harm is a rallying wake-up call that will change the way we look at health care for women.

A scathing indictment of the historic and current misogynist medical/research system. One example after another of women being dismissed, misdiagnosed, or undiagnosed until their tenaciousness finally gets them the answers. I have to say, it was painful to read because I resonated with so many of their stories, both about how some MDs have treated me, how big things (like my back being broken) were dismissed as "sciatica" for years, and the frustration of chronic fatigue, fibro, and migraine. Shoutouts to all the chronic disease warriors who contributed their stories. A must-read for every physician in the world, not just the US. It's a dense read (hence the 4 stars vs. 5), probably better for physicians than the general public, but anyone who identifies as female who has had frustrations with the medical system will feel validated reading or skimming it.

Maya Dusenbery’s “Doing Harm” uncovers the plight of women seeking healthcare. They are often ignored and dismissed, despite efforts toward an accurate diagnosis and effective treatment plan. Maya’s book describes why medical research has avoided attention to women and why current treatment is misaligned to meet female needs. Her book includes many stories of women who have battled our healthcare system in their pursuit of care, sometimes with tragic consequences. As a physician, medical coder/compliance officer/auditor and caregiver, I can attest to Maya’s findings. With lipstick, clean clothes and groomed hair, many medical providers instantly believe a woman looks and, therefore, feels fine. “Doing Harm” is a must read for medical providers, researchers and health policy makers. We owe it to our mother, sisters and daughters to improve female healthcare.Michael Warner, DO, CPC, CPCO, CPMAPresident, Patient Advocacy InitiativesDetailed discussion posted April 5, 2018 on the AAPC Knowledge Center, “Co-Author Your Medical Record With a PreHx”

This book moves our stories from disconnected anecdotes with little power to create change to quantified and substantiated experiences that collectively are dramatic, alarming, heartbreaking and motivating. She provides validation to our experiences and gives power to our voices. More importantly though, she looks underneath the pain to find the legacy, systemic and personal biases at play and through that begins to help us find a way forward. As we look to solve for the many factors driving healthcare costs up and outcomes down, this book should be required reading for everyone - those who work within the healthcare industry, those who regulate and legislate it and all those who are continuing to access it (or attempting to) in hopes of finding care and healing.

This book is absolutely a must read for anyone who is sick, in healthcare, or needs to learn how the healthcare system is so broken it leaves women more sick than they started. There are compelling anecdotes that I felt deep in my soul and tore at every ounce of empathy and compassion I have because I’ve been through this horrible system since I was a young child. This book is incredibly well researched and sourced, and I believe it should be read by every pre-med, nursing, public health, etc. student so that they can see how they can exacerbate problems or solve them. I listened to the audiobook through my library and then came back to buy the book because I think it’s so important, I’ll read it over and over again. If you’re sick and trying to find answers: read this book. If you’re in the healthcare industry: read this book. If you have a loved one who counts on you to be their advocate: read this book. If you have compassion for the struggles sick women go through: read this book. This isn’t a book that will cure your ails or be a miracle in terms of changing the path your sickness takes, but it will change your life in the sense that you’ll realize that you aren’t alone, you aren’t crazy, you can do this, and with all the systemic oppression sick women have experienced, it’s time to raise our voices to be heard and treated with dignity and respect, even when the answers don’t seem “right”. This book shows how doctors have silenced and shut millions of sick women down, so much so that they’ve missed many important diseases and diagnoses that affect millions. This book doesn’t read like dry, medical non-fiction; I found it riveting from the start. The statistics are bleak and sad; the anecdotes are heart wrenching, but this book was written with those of us in mind who will hold onto it and say “wow, look how many women have had similar struggles” and how our doctors can learn to communicate, listen, and learn better through their patient’s experiences. I HIGHLY recommend this book for anyone and everyone that has ever spent more than 2 minutes in a medical facility.

This book is helping me to understand how I ended up not getting diagnosed with a life-long, genetic disease until I was 36 years old (despite having a family history and symptoms since toddlerhood), after the disease had taken much more of a toll on my body than necessary. More than that, It's a valuable description of how gender-based research and clinical trials can be and what the consequences and ramifications of that gender bias might be. I highly recommend this book to all women, anyone who loves a woman, and all healthcare providers.

About the Author

JEREMY BENTHAM was born in London on February 15, 1748, to a family of comfortable means. His was the life of a child prodigy who read Latin at three years of age and at twelve was enrolled in Oxford University, where he received his undergraduate degree at the age of sixteen. Thereafter, he studied law at Lincoln's Inn, Westminster. Inheritances from his parents afforded Bentham the opportunity to pursue a life of study and writing. While in his mid-forties, he dedicated himself to the critical analysis and reform of moral, political, religious, legal, educational, and economic institutions as they existed in England. Though he found the judicial system to be hypocritical and corrupt, Bentham's fascination with the fundamental ideals of the law steered him toward philosophy and science in an effort to develop standards that could ground the social order. His reformist tendencies proved to be a significant factor in the development of his now famous system of ethics known as utilitarianism, wherein human action was to be judged by the amount of pleasure and pain it produced. Bentham's published works include: A Fragment on Government (1776), An Introduction to the Principles of Morals and Legislation (1781), The Rationale of Judicial Evidence (edited by John Stuart Mill in 1825), and two volumes on Constitutional Code (ca. 1830). Bentham died in London on June 16, 1832.

AN INTRODUCTION TO THE PRINCIPLES OF MORALS AND LEGISLATION by Jeremy Bentham is at the origin of Utilitarianism, so very necessary for understanding this philosophy.

As an attempt to create a unified theory of law by cataloging the causes of, needs for, and nature of laws in society this work is quite successful.

The 2010 paperback is basically a photocopied version, which seems like it was done on a melting photocopier! Many of the pages are barely readable, and there are photocopied notes someone took, which aren't even helpful... I highly recommend purchasing the 1988 version instead! I don't know why such a version is being sold by Amazon.

ABSOLUTELY PERFECT IN EVERY WAY

As expected

Bentham is much more sophisticated in his thinking than many realize. He is the most important political phllosopher of all time.

The works speak for them selves over time, but it was great to be able to have a complete set of his works

So a great book for Jeremy Bentham, and work about the utilitarism system. Always Bentham works it is fantastic and formative.

From School Library Journal

Baby-Toddlers—A humorous, loving take on the excitement and nervousness, tenderness and heartache, and worry and fear of new parenthood. Bold graphics in vivid colors are interspersed with equally bold text in various font sizes. The front and back covers feature large mirrors to include youngsters in the story, making each reading unique to the two people sharing it. Most pages end with the refrain, "while we read this book together" to reinforce the idea of sharing stories and laptime together. Each page starts with a statement, such as, "THANK YOU FOR JOINING US/your arrival has been anxiously awaited." Upcoming highlights focus on music, cats, and stories. The graphic drawings are designed to look like universal signs, and while they will certainly engage young readers, they are also designed to make the presumably older book sharer chuckle. Willems perfectly captures the essence of parenthood: "We will strive to make your stay as comfortable as possible. However…there will be TURBULENCE. There will be UNEXPECTED EVENTS. There will be HUMAN ERROR. Fortunately, we are happy to provide you LOVE. At no extra cost." VERDICT A fun addition to parenting collections and to possibly circulate next to Knuffle Bunny, Pigeon, and Elephant and Piggie.—Lisa Kropp, Lindenhurst Memorial Library, NY

This is a new favorite! There is the perfect amount of sweetness, humor and real life. I bought it for my baby, but the older kids had me reread it to them immediately. They love it. This book would make a fantastic gift for a baby shower or new baby gift.

I love reading this book to our 4 month old. No Willems has a fantastic sense of humor, and this welcome guide for new arrivals is wonderful. If you have a new arrival, or know someone who does, get this book. It's worth every penny.

I chuckled clear through this book that i purchased as a new baby gift -- but it's sweet too. I vandalized/personalized it for this family by changing the page on cats to one about dogs and laminating a photo of their dogs on top of the cat graphic. I'm sure these parents will enjoy this Mo Willems book as much as the others they are reading or will be reading to and with their girls soon!

We actually rented this book from the library because my 6 year old daughter is a HUGE Mo Willems fan, as am I. When it was time to return the book and check out new ones, she went right back and wanted to get this book again. We decided after checking it out numerous times that it was time to purchase it and keep it forever. This book is one I will for sure be giving expectant parents from here on out. It's so sweet!

Love love love this book. It's classic Mo Willems - funny and different but not totally weird. I didn't think my almost three year old would 'get' the concept but he really seems to. He thinks it's hilarious and has asked me to read it to him at least five times since it arrived yesterday.

This book is so sweet! I have loved reading it to my newborns. They are soothed by the repetition and interested in the bold pictures. It uses a lot of big words so it would be hard for older children to understand- although at a certain age it would be great for building vocabulary! It’s actually pretty funny as well, lots of classic Mo Willems observations. I’ve been buying copies for all my friends as well!

I love mo willems! This isn't my favorite book of his. It's more wordy than I have come to expect from mo, and the graphics aren't as fun as usual, however the whole book was designed for baby's eyes to be able to grow from looking at it. And the text is more for mom and dad.

Such a great book! Only wish it was around when my kids were babies. It has a mirror in the front and back. Such a sweet message inside. Cannot get enough of Mo Willems-a family fave! :)
