Jaworski writes about his experience and perspective as Watergate Special Prosecutor. As he breaks down the details of the investigation, the reasons why this man of remarkable integrity was chosen for this poisonous job become abundantly clear.A steadfast Republican, Jaworski does not let political considerations distract him from his duty.The book concludes with an excellent explanation of why Nixon received Ford's pardon and why Nixon could not and should not have been criminally prosecuted.Although not as entertaining as "All the Presidents Men," it is far superior for it's depth and historical perspective.

This was a present. It was written by a person who was involvedwith investigating Richard Nixon. When Leon Jaworski learned of all thehorrible secrets, he cried...and the nation lost so very muchfrom this crime.

Leonidas "Leon" Jaworski (1905-1982) was the second Special Prosecutor during the Watergate Scandal. In addition to this 1976 book, Jaworski also wrote the books The Lawyer in Society,Confession and avoidance: A memoir, and Crossroads.He wrote, "By early January, 1974, it became apparent that President Richard Nixon, for all his public posturing... had decided in private to keep the facts buried." (Pg. 87) Jaworski defends offering plea bargaining to persons such as Charles Colson because "successful plea bargaining was bringing us to a point where I could ask the United States Supreme Court to bypass the Court of Appeals and rule on our right to the President's tapes." (Pg. 160)He quotes lawyer George Frampton's critique of the notion of not prosecuting Nixon after his resignation: "I wonder if ten years from now history will endorse the notion that Mr. Nixon has 'suffered enough.' The powerful men about him have also lost their jobs and been disgraced, but many of them will have lost their liberty and livelihood. Mr. Nixon, on the other hand, will continue to be supported in lavish style with a pension and subsidies at taxpayers' expense until his death... The prospect of Mr. Nixon publishing his memoirs (and thereby adding several million dollars to his net worth) should remind us that unlike his aides ... Mr. Nixon will have the 'last say' about his own role in Watergate if he is not prosecuted. This why... it is important (absent a full admission of guilt) to have some definitive resolution of Mr. Nixon's Watergate actions." (Pg. 227)Nevertheless, Jaworski admitted that if the court had asked him whether he believed that Nixon could receive a prompt, fair trial, "I would have to answer, as an officer of the court, in the negative. If the question was then asked as to how long it would be before Nixon could (be tried), I would have to say in fairness that I did not know." (Pg. 238) He also refused to "procure an indictment of Richard M. Nixon for the sole purpose of generating a purported court test on the legality of the pardon (by President Ford)," as this "would constitute a spurious proceeding in which I had no faith." (Pg. 248, 255)He concluded on the note, "From Watergate we learned what generations before us have known: our Constitution works. And during the Watergate years it was interpreted again so as to reaffirm that no one---absolutely no one---is above the law." (Pg. 279)As Jaworski was definitely one of the "key players" of Watergate, this is essential reading for students of the scandal.

Okay, we'll take it for granted that the Media Age has accelerated & magnified all of these problems, but here are some of the familiar themes we find in Jaworski's memoir of the Watergate Special Prosecutor's Office: questions about the constitutionality of the Office itself, expansive jurisdiction, convictions for perjury instead of for underlying crimes, leaks, grand jury report to Congress, specious privilege claims, etc. All of the supposedly unprecedented events of recent years are all here.Jaworski is a pretty pedestrian writer & his focus is very specific to issues that concerned the Special Prosecutor's Office; one longs for a little greater perspective. However, he leaves little doubt that Richard Nixon and his aides engaged in a conspiracy to cover up White House involvement in the Watergate & Ellsberg breakins and, in doing so, obstructed justice.Ultimately, the most important impression that the book leaves is that America is a better place because we forced from office a man who was not fit to be President. Once upon a time in America, we cared about such matters.GRADE: C

This is a 1976 book by the lawyer who became Special Prosecutor after Nixon had Archibad Cox fired. I of course in the late 1970's and early 1980's read the famed Watergate books--All the President';s Men on Sep 1,1974, and Breach of Faith on Sep 4, 1976, and John Dean's book, Blind Ambition on Dec 7, 1976, and Judge Sirica's book on June 7, 1990. But I thought it would be good o read this book by Jaworski, and it was. He sets out in precise lawyerly language the crimes that Nixon committed and the evidence which supports the charges. After reading the book few would say Jaworski is wrong. He also was convinced Ford had the power to pardon Nixon and concludes such may have been the right thing to do, even though Nixon never accepted the blame which was clearly his. I suppose this event in our political history is not too pertinent now but I found it rewarding and saisfying to see that right was done when Nixon became, clearly, a crook..

I never thought I'd like a series a dark as this one. But Nicholas Bella proved me wrong and I'm glad he has. The first six books of this series will take you by storm and leave you wanting more. Mr. Bella doesn't disappoint with the first book of season two.Theoden is a sexy, demanding, brutal vampire/dragon hybrid. He is a master. We've met a some interesting people in the first season but now we are meeting the man that made Theoden himself, King Ara. That's one vampire I want to know more about.It was great to hear the story from Theoden's point of view as well as Noel's. It was also good to see Theoden lay a little 'smack down'. We got a little taste of what the master vampire is made of.If this what the first installment of season two has to offer I can't wait for the next installment!

I absolutely loved the first six installments and had high hopes for the future of this series, but I have to say that I think I will stop here. There is something that just sits wrong with me about having a story start sending main characters away to doom and gloom. Characters that you have come to love in the story too. And with Theoden's sire forcing him to produce more children against his will, especially when we all know how long it took to train Noel, the timeline to train these new children is even shorter. The whole storyline just sours the great writing of the first installments. It's really quite a shame but I will not be recommending the continuing saga of this story.

The story was lacking, in well, a story. There was a "plot" in there, but it mostly was just about sex. Dominating sex. When i read the synopsis of the book, I simply thought the book had details of sex introduced throughout, but it's more like the other way around. It wasn't a bad book, but it just wasn't enough of an actual story for me. The storyline of the characters seemed interesting though: vampires, dragons, hybrids, etc.

There are truly no words to express the level of appreciation I have for Nicholas Bella's series New Haven. These books are excellent and I'm falling in love or hate with the characters.I couldn't put "Commanded" down!

Theoden is being challenged in more ways than one. He has been promoted, but one of his brothers is not in agreement with the promotion. He had to rise to the challenge and make himself known as the most qualified. Also his king Ara challenges him in other ways. Can he rise to the challenge?

What a way to start the second season of "The House of Theoden" Nicholas Bella keeps you glued to your seat. He gives you a riveting dark look at vampires as they grow to fight their enemies. Would recommend this series for those that likes dark serial reads

really enjoyed the first season of this series and now started on season 2. I have to say it is starting out hot . I enjoy reading Theoden's side of things and cant wait to see what happens next with all his children.. on to #2

Noel is finally a brother. Theoden becomes a prince and will make more sons against his will, to fill his King's army.

I got this book as my November Kindle First choice. This is the first time I’ve read the monthly choice in the month it was released. This book is the To Kill A Mockingbird of this generation. It should be required reading for every person on this planet.I read a lot of books. Like, a lot. This is most original, most relevant book I have read this year. This is a book that will stay with me forever. If you’ve ever been a bully, been bullied, not understood your sexuality, felt marginalized or privileged, don’t understand what it means to have privilege or if you’re privileged and don’t know it, read this book.This book will make you feel uncomfortable in places, and it should. Hopefully it will also open your eyes to things you may not have considered. It contains almost every “phobic” word out there. I caught myself wincing every now and again.The plot is in multiple POVs, each chapter gives another layer to the ultimate tragedy of the story. A lot of the characters aren’t very likable, but do find redemption in the end.James Han Mattson has written a beautifully written book that should become an instant classic. A definite Top of 2017 Reads!

Sorry if this review is filled with superlatives, but after finishing Prayers, all I can say is wow! It is an amazing first person story. Each of the main characters gives their perspective on the events leading up to and following a tragedy. In the end, I had tears in my eyes because I understood so well why Ricky, the perpetrator, did what he did. An amazing bit of writing!Mattson did a perfect job of developing each character just enough. We learned what we needed to know, but no more, about all of them.I have nothing negative to say about The Lost Prayers of Ricky Graves. If the book description interests you, I highly recommend it!

This guy is a wonderfully perceptive writer and the characters are ones you will remember for a long time. It's NOT the typical book in any way. I read it in one sitting and can't wait to see more from this first time author.

A very good read.I should begin by noting that I downloaded this book because it was the first remotely queer thing I'd seen in the Kindle First selections, but I didn't expect much. In fact—really fun disclosure—I expected to actively dislike it. I back-burnered it until I was just plain out of stuff to read.See, if you're gay and you've been paying attention, you're probably already tired of noble gay tragedies. I know I am. I assumed this book was one. I also figured it would trade on the sensationalism surrounding school shootings.On both counts, I was wrong.I mean, make no mistake—this book is crawling with nobility, gayness, and tragedy. They just don't always come from the angles you'd expect. It's also crawling with a kind of deep, broad grasp of human nature in its jarring complexity. The characters don't turn out as you might expect. Compassion moves through strange channels. People hurt each-other, or seriously think about it, and in the act of doing so come to see the full humanity of the people they hurt.Or, well—not all of them, because even in real life some people never get it, and some never have the chance to get it. There's a lot of real life crammed into this book.Likewise, it pivots around an adolescent murder-suicide—but that event is never, itself, the center of attention. It acts, instead, as a kind of center of gravity, drawing together the disparate threads of the narrators' lives. It's a catalyst—critical to the process, but neither the process itself nor the end product. We are asked to look directly at it without ever being invited to gawp.All of this is wrapped up in an array of pitch-perfect voices. Mattson has a fine ear. Once he finds each narrator's voice, he rarely falters. Instead, he reveals each speaker's faults and vulnerabilities, strengths and triumphs through deft and subtle shifts in tone and diction. So often, Mattson's characters succeed in showing us more by how they say things than by what they say. That's a remarkable skill.Ultimately, ~The Secret Prayers of Ricky Graves~ is simultaneously both unflinching and exquisitely sensitive—no mean feat for any author in any genre, no matter how experienced.I'll be keeping an eye out for Mattson's next book.

This was a great read, I definitely recommend this book. The author vividly portrays his characters; you really connect with their story. The text is also nuanced by the mediums with which they communicate with one another. The depth that this approach adds gives a sense of perspective into the character’s need to move forward with life while they each search to find their own answers. The struggle is real. Would you hate someone you love? Forgive someone you hate?

and told in a unique way. It's difficult to understand the stress on young men as they battle with expectations of family, friends, and others while coping with sexual identity. This book explores some possibilities, especially the importance of communication. Homosexuality is not an aberration, it's a fact... been around a long time and not gonna go away. It should be better accepted by everyone, like it or not. One interesting point in the story is that while Ricky struggled to acknowledge his difference, his mother, sister, friends, classmates and most people who knew him had already accepted that he was gay. But no one talked about it, no one helped him talk about it. Sad.

When I decided to start ketogenics I bought a general book plus three cookbooks. This book was the smallest of the three cookbooks but easily the most useful.Amanda lee includes basic ketogenics information at the front of the book and tips for eating away from home at the end. In between is a lot of helpful information....The book contains a two week menu for beginners. (Face it, there's a 90% chance you won't follow it to the letter, but it does help set your thinking in the right direction.) For each individual week there's a shopping list which, by itself, will help you adjust your kitchen quite a bit. There are tips on the best sweeteners (Swerve over Splenda), the oils you'll need, produce, canned and bottled items, pantry items, and meats. Something to consider as you go along is that some items, like almond and coconut flour are expensive items to stock up on, but you'll use considerably less than non-keto recipes will use for regular flour. Do what you can afford. Just know that there are some must-have staples like coconut oil and olive oil.....The recipes themselves are divided into smoothies and breakfasts, appetizers and snacks, fish and poultry, meats, veggies and sides, desserts, and staples. Each individual recipe gives an overall "keto quotient" (how close it fits the idea balance of fats, carbs, and protein) as well as what each serving contains in calories and the fats, carbs, and protein for those servings. This makes life a lot easier if you are using a phone or tablet app to keep an eating record.I find myself in the kitchen a lot more, but that's a good thing, especially since I'm gaining more energy and endurance from the diet. Since I live alone I've also invested in more plastic bags and containers. When I use one of the recipes I divide the finished product into the number of servings, eat one and bag the rest for the freezer or fridge. [p]Recipes include items like homemade salad dressings and mayonnaise in a good keto balance. Since I'm eating a lot more salad this has been handy to have. I also thought I would miss sweets but I've been using the book to make snacks with stevia products. There are some chocolate recipes using cocoa powder and oils that help stifle any chocolate cravings. The oils often melt at a little above room temperature so I put chocolate pieces in bags in the freezer and granola in the fridge in snack bags.!I have yet to find a recipe that didn't turn out well, though my tastebuds like a little more salt. Better to add it in later because you can't take it out once it's cooked. The only bad turnout I had was my mistake, assuming that coconut flour would substitute for almond flour. It won't.!There's a wide variety of tastes to help you learn your way through adapting the lifestyle to your tastes.!Thanks author and great job! Best wishes, Todd M.

I found 51 amazing and simple recipes in this Ketogenic cookbook. This book is well written and easy to understand. All recipes are saved with simple ingredients and with easy cooking directions. All instructions are clear, easy to follow, with full nutritional information. I have tried some recipes of this cookbook and they were really great. I liked this book and I'm glad to add this cookbook to my Keto Diet collection. I recommend this book for those who need such type of information.

I highly recommend this book for several reasons. Easy to read. Not too technical. As an older person, I also liked the larger font, lol. I really liked how they presented the information and gave you week to week meal plans, including yummy snacks. The back end of the book included very organized shopping lists according to each week. It listed dairy, produce, meat, and gave you a list of pantry staples to have on hand. I was impressed with the recipes too. They all sound so yummy and are not complex at all. For snacks, you get Fat Bombs to make sure that you are getting enough fat in your diet! Crazy, right? I can’t wait to make the chocolate chip cookie dough fat bombs.

I read it from cover to cover and back again. I've highlighted sections, bookmarked recipes, and tested many of them out. It's really been a lifesaver for me.

The beginning of the book, which describes the Keto diet, is extremely basic and information that you can find online for free. That is disappointing. A simple internet search would easily show you the same information. There are a lot of recipes, but I am disappointed that there are no pictures of the foods. The most appealing part of a cookbook is looking at the pictures of all the food you can now make. Also disappointed that this book does not contain weekly eating plans for beginners. This is a very confusing diet, I was hoping this book would provide some helpful information, which it really does not.

Recipes have more carbs in one serving that you can eat in one day on the Keto diet plan. Wish I had not purchased. Extremely disappointed.

The recipes and instructions are very easy to understand and follow. I am in the process of trying several of these. The only thing that I didn't like was the amount of coconut used, whether oil, flour or other. I didn't see a substitution list anywhere. I voluntarily reviewed this after receiving a free copy to read.

I'm slowing going through these CD's and they are ok. There is the required amount of repetition that you can rewind and get what they are saying in Japanese and the exercises on the CD are appropriate to get a beginner learning of the language. Not great with writing and alphabet. There is no explanation of the Japanese writing styles hiragana, katakana nor kanji nor is there any indication of the Japanese alphabet only sounds are given against the English alphabet, which is strange. The grammar and number explanation is otherwise good and explained simply so you get it. Not good with building up your vocab as the CD sticks to a few basic words e.g. karuma - is used in many examples. You do learn a few basic words, but don't practice a range of vocab. So it is good to get a beginner started and I would recommend it if you are going to travel to Japan.

Coming from the Pimsleur method of learning Japanese, this audio course felt rushed, and I felt I couldn't absorb as much information.The vocabulary words are shot at you 10-15 at a time, and there is little review before the next set of vocab, causing me to have to listen to each 1-minute-long "mile marker" over and over again.This is to Pimsleur as trying to memorize a dictionary is to learning from a textbook.It just doesn't seem prudent to listen to in the car because I find myself either listening to the 1-minute tracks on repeat until they sink in, or listen to a bunch at a time, and retaining nothing because the quizzing and recall flies by so quickly.Also, the response time is extremely short. I can barely answer the question in English in that amount of time.ALL THAT SAID, a strong vocabulary is necessary obviously, and I am eager to get to a level where this tape will be useful for me. For right now, I'm going to settle for the Pimsleur method of simple vocabulary, and focusing on grammar and sentence structure.

This tape course is great for people who really want/need in-depth Japanese lessons or review. You get a good idea of sentence structure and pronunciation. However, if you are trying to learn some basic Japanese for a short-term trip, this is not the tape for you. You need to know how to ask for basic items (food, beverages, train tickets, the bathroom). I've travelled to Japan once, and plan to go again, and I don't think I'll need to know how to say "It's a big new car" or "Let's go to a concert" to a total stranger on the street. Buy this tape if you need some support for reglar Japanese lessons, or just want to generally improve your understanding of the language for business or regular travel. Nice set-up, but not practical for day-to-day needs.

This program is much more difficult than I expected, which pleases me. I had thought it would be something that I could learn in a week or two but I am finding that the authors were able to compress a lot of material on those five CDs. Highly recommended. Sionara...

This was great for me because I got to hear how words are pronounced by a native speaker instead of trying to figure out how to pronounce them on my own. If you have long commutes it's great, or put it on your ipod to listen to throughout the day.

My husband and I moved to Japan with the US Military and thankfully, we knew about a year in advance of this life-changing event. I ordered Drive Time because I had also previously bought this program in German for long commutes to work. I listened to the Japanese CDs during our long moves across country, to my commutes to work, and even occasionally on runs or bike rides. When we arrived in Japan I knew enough to get by and the locals were very excited and thankful that I took the time to learn their language. Everything in this program is what is taught in the first few lessons of a Japanese class, so I was ahead of the game when I decided to brush up. It wont make you fluent, but it will definitely get you where you need to go in small conversations.

About the Author

Marshall L. Michel III is a native of New Orleans who attended Georgetown and Harvard Universities. He joined the US Air Force in 1966 and from 1970 to 1973 flew 321 combat missions. He was the assistant air attaché at the American embassy in Tel Aviv from 1977 to 1980, when he returned to the United States to fly F-15s at Langley Air Force Base, Virginia. He later served as the Israel desk officer for the Joint Chiefs of Staff in the Pentagon, as a fellow at the Jaffee Center for Strategic Studies at Tel Aviv University, and on the NATO staff in Brussels, Belgium. He retired from the Air Force in 1992 and now lives in Biloxi, Mississippi, USA.

Another excellent volume of Osprey’s new Air Campaign series, this book gives very good and potentially controversial insight into Linebacker II. It not only covers the nuts and bolts of how the missions were planned and executed by the US Air Force and the stout defense put up by the North Vietnamese. It also discusses the command decisions and failures by both the Americans and the North Vietnamese during this campaign.The US conducted Rolling Thunder - a three and a half year sustained aerial campaign against North Vietnam – that was both limited and ineffective. In 1965 the US did not have the right aircraft, munitions or the technology to conduct an effective strategic bombing campaign and would not have it until 1968 just as the bombing campaign was halted. However, by the time Linebacker I was initiated in May 1972, the US had the right mix of aircraft, munitions and technology to wage an efficient and effective air campaign. Mr. Michel explains why certain technology and tactics not used in Rolling Thunder were effective in Linebacker. This includes an explanation why chaff was not used in Rolling Thunder, but effectively used in Linebacker. More effective jamming and smart munitions were also developed that resulted in a low loss rate and effective targeting during Linebacker I and II.The book details the great lengths the North Vietnamese went thru to shoot down a B-52. B-52s began bombing southern North Vietnam in Sep 1966 in support of Operation Tally Ho – the interdiction campaign designed to isolate the battlefield in Northern I Corps. The North moved SAM batteries into southern North Vietnam in May 1967 in the hope of downing a B-52 and made several unsuccessful attempts in 1967 and 1968. The book does not mention that though no B-52 was shot down, several were damaged by SAMs in 1968 and again in early 1972. The North attained lessons learned that resulted in success later that year. The first B-52 shot down by a SAM took place in Nov 1972, not during Linebacker II. A side note, the North Vietnamese even moved Soviet made KS-30 130mm AA guns to just north of the DMZ that were capable of shooting a round up to 30,000 feet at max charge – a fact reported by B-52 crews in 1968! They also attempted to send MIGs into Laos in the hope of catching a B-52 cell unaware and shooting one down.At the end of the book, Mr. Michel provides an interesting insight into the results of the campaign as seen from both the American and North Vietnamese view. It has always been an article of faith among Americans that the bombing campaign was unquestionably successful and brought North Vietnam to its knees. Proponents of strategic bombing frequently use this campaign as an example of what can be accomplished if the politicians would “unleash” the military. However, Mr. Michel reveals that the campaign came close to failure not because of the politicians, but because of the lack of will and incompetence of SAC’s leadership. For once it was the politicians – President Nixon and Ambassador Kissinger - that had the will to push on, forcing SAC’s leaders to adapt. Linebacker II was ultimately successful, but its success was in support of a flawed, short term goal of getting America out of Vietnam instead “winning the war”.On the North Vietnamese side, they arrogantly believed the US would not respond to their Easter Offensive with a renewed bombing of the North and the Hanoi area. So they foolishly moved their air defense missiles south to support offensive ground operations. It was a fatal error in judgement that left the Hanoi-Haiphong area open to massive air attack. In addition, because of détente between the super powers, their Soviet allies did not provide advanced air defense systems like the more effective SA-3 SAM and additional MIGs to defend against the renewed bombing. However, the Vietnamese firmly believe they were “victorious” during Linebacker II, having withstood the might of US strategic military power.The author concludes that a sustained Linebacker II campaign would not have been successful whether it was conducted early in the war or later. The bombings, as with most strategic bombing campaigns of the 20th Century, resulted in uniting the population of North Vietnam. Though thoroughly frightening to the North Vietnamese, this shared experience only provided more resolve to resist and fight on. We’ve seen this time and again in Britain during WWI and WWII, in Germany during WWII and during the Israeli air campaign against Egypt in 1970.I strongly recommend this book to historians of the Vietnam War as well as military planners who may have to execute another Linebacker. This is by far one of the best narratives about Linebacker II since Karl J. Eschmann wrote his excellent book on the campaign in 1989. Clearly the lessons of Linebacker and Rolling Thunder were applied during Desert Storm with great success. However, those lessons learned from the Vietnam War can be perishable as we found during the air campaign for Kosovo in 1999 and must be constantly refreshed and relearned.

In this Osprey Air Campaign book #6, author Marshall Michel uses research from both sides to effectively introduce the reader the Linebacker II, an air campaign designed to bring the North Vietnamese back to the bargaining table in order to end America's involvement in the Vietnam War.It's testament to his thoroughness that Michel canvasses not only SAC and the USAF archives, but also those of Vietnam coupled with interviews with the participants. The color artwork, period photos and maps are all very good and give the reader visual cues to help understand the tactics and course of battles in the asian night.The author sets the stage very well with the strategic picture in which these events take place. Both sides are analyzed as to capabilities and strengths/weaknesses as well as the objectives for each side. He chronicles the course of the nightly battles in the night skies where the USAF initially stumbled because of SAC trying to control the battle from afar without feedback from the local commands actually tasked with carrying out the battles.I think the author does a good job of analyzing not only what happened, but also what the effects were and how Linebacker II did what Nixon and Kissinger wanted it to - accomplish the limited aim of bringing the North Vietnamese back to the peace talks so the US could get the POWs back and extricate itself from a war no one wanted to fight any longer.I think the author is frank, thoughtful and accurate in his telling of this campaign and it's aftermath and effects. It's not the last word, but it's certainly a fine and accessible overview in a very readable package.

His adroit analysis of information from U.S. and Vietnamese sources provides real insights into what worked, what didn't, and why, for both sides.Christmas of 1972 found the U.S. eager to disengage from the Vietnam conflict, but on something resembling its own terms. The use of Strategic Air Command (SAC) B-52's for conventional strike missions was intended to send a message, one that was almost fumbled by SAC's attempt to drive the show from Omaha, thousands of miles and several time zones removed from the war. For this reviewer, it is unfortunately no surprise that the willingness of local commanders to challenge SAC on its poor tactics saved lives but killed careers. For this reviewer, it was a pleasant surprise that the author was prepared to deal evenhandedly with the lingering controversies over Linebacker II. Very highly recommended as an instructive summary of the operation.

It is easy to carry around. It gives you a phonetic pronunciation. It has a lot in it.

print was much too small to read even wearing my glasses!!!

The print in this dictionary is very very very small!

I'm only grading it a 2 because of the small print & I don't remember there being a large print in it.So far that's my only complaint having to use a magnify glass to read it.

Just what I needed for researching language from the 1950's. In excellent condition.

This old Webster's Dictionary is probably the most valuable book I have ever owned. I love this old book. When we were first married, some 44 years ago, we were traveling through a small town in Alabama. We were sort of broke, living on this and that, luck and love. We stopped in a small town that happened to have a grocery store. We went in to buy food as we certainly could not afford a restaurant of any sort at that time. As luck would have it, this store had a promotional sale going on. Buy $10.00 worth of food, and they would, for only a dollar more, would toss in this wonderful dictionary. We only had about eight dollars between us at that time, but by digging in the floor boards of the car and behind the seats, we came up with the coin we needed. (Finding six pop bottles at a rest stop the day before did not hurt...three cents each - refund!). Best buy we ever made. (The bread was a bit stale from that store, and I swear the packages of pickle loaf meat had sort of a green tinge, but that was okay, we got our book!)Over the years I have used this one a lot. I can promise you that I have yet to find one spelling error in it. The dictionary contains more than 330,000 definitions, over 2,000 pages plus an additional 350 pages of notes and maps. It weighs a bit over five pounds and is at least five inches thick and has a hard, durable cover. The binding on the book is excellent. This is all quite important, as this book has served us well for more than merely looking up words. Let me explain and illustrate the various roles this work has played throughout the years.It has been a rodent exterminator. We lived in a small, and I mean a really small apartment in Turkey for a number of years. We shared this apartment with three cats and had an additional 20 plus cats that we fed in the back garden. One night, while working, I noted the cats watching something at my feet in their usually laid-back manner. It was a rat! Right there at my feet! I grabbed this very dictionary and squashed the poor little critter right there in his tracks. Lesson learned: The dictionary is a better rodent exterminator than a group of over fed, lazy and spoiled house cats, and you don't have to feed or water it and it has never gotten even one fur ball.It has acted as a device to repair furniture. A few years after "the murder of the rat," we were in bed. Now keep in mind that my wife and I have always been in very good physical condition, and are both rather athletic. Anyway, one night the old bed we had at the time came crashing to the floor. The bottom leg had broken while we were expressing our fondness for each other. (Don't ask why it was the bottom corner leg...this is a family site, and we need not go into that!). There was no way that we could afford a new bed, and I am not very good at fixing things, so, me being me, I used this very dictionary to prop the bed up. It worked! The book acted as a bed leg for over a year! I have also used it on a chair to stand on to change light bulbs and once or twice I have used it to prop open windows.It is quite useful as an aide for love making...see furniture repair note above.It can act as a rodent repellant under certain conditions. I stored this book, along with a number of contemporary novels in an old garage for a bit. When I opened the box, all the novels had been shredded by mice for bedding. Not one mouse had so much had taken even a nibble of my faithful old Webster's. I can only assume that these were highly literate mice and had great respect for the English language. There were also a number of old New Yorker magazines in the box...they shredded those too.It can act as a medical device. Several years ago I had open heart surgery. During my recovery at home, I had to cough, forced to by a wife who insisted on my following the physician's silly orders. Anyway, coughing, when you have been split open like a caught carp, is painful. Holding a single pillow at my chest helped some, but if I added the dictionary to the top of the pillow, I gained tremendous relief. This was great! About four years ago, while trail running, I injured my right ankle. The physician recommended ice, aspirin and elevation for the right leg. By placing this dictionary on my old ottoman, and a pillow on top the dictionary, it was exactly the right height and I was comfortable.It can be used as in intellectual weapon. I cannot for the life of me, after all these years, beat my wife at scrabble, something we have played constantly since the beginning of time. The primary reason for my losses is this book! She uses it as a weapon, challenging word after word I use. This does not seem right some how, but what can I do? The book is the Sacred Scrabble Book. I dare not go against it, or for that matter, my wife.It has acted as a coffee rest for my mug for years. It has hundreds of coffee ring stains on the cover and back, along with various other stains and scrapes. This has had no effect on the information found within, what so ever.Now keep in mind, this is an old book. It does not have many of the current works, as in like those added to our language over the past thirty years or so. This is okay though. The chances of my using any to those words in anything I write are almost nonexistent. These are technical terms for the most part. As to other words that have crept into our language....well I probably don't need to be using those words anyway.All in all, you could go do a lot worse than owning this book. It is a very useful thing to have around the house. I recommend it highly.
