I actually love these stories and the author. But I hate that Random House Inc put 8 stories on 5 CDs. Soooo annoying! try to have your kids listen to a full story, and then 3 chapters from a second story and then ask you to change the CD. then the next disc is two halves of 2 different stories, its just terrible. Even worse, I tried to rip the CDs and put them on the ipod, but the formatting is all off. All of the chapters are mislabled as are the stories and the CD numbers. I'll never look at Random House the same again, so dissapointed in them. We have four sets of these stories, but I refuse to ever buy another thing from Random House

I listened to part of the story with my 4yr old nephew. It did not hold his interest and I found it a bit irritating. I know these are very popular childrens' books, so maybe the paper version will be better when he learns to read. And perhaps he's too young for the content of these stories, but even if he were older I don't think I could sit through this listening with him.

My kids and I love the Magic Tree House books! I can't give this audio book 5 stars, though, because of how Random House formatted the books on CDs. Rather than giving one CD per book, the 8 books are spread across 5 CDs. When my kids are listening to a book at bedtime, I don't want them to have to get up and change CDs halfway through a book, let alone try to find the start of a book in the middle of a CD. I wish Random house had spent the tiny bit of extra money to have one CD per book, and to print a picture of the book cover on each CD.I'm fixing the problem by making copies for my kids, including the tracks for each book on a separate CD, and printing labels using book cover images. For those who aren't technically savvy, this isn't the best solution. Random House, please think about the audience (4-8 year old kids) before skimping like this again.

If your child enjoys reading the magic tree house series I highly recommend these CD's. We listen to them while reading the books which is great for my 7-year old who can following the words as she goes. The author narrates the book and it's done well, easy to listen to and very enjoyable. My kids learn so much from every book, they go in the past and teach them history but the stores are fun so the kids enjoy it. The series starts off easier reading and gets progressively harder as the books go on. We have to #40.

As others have mentioned, this product is a complete disaster from a practical standpoint. The discs are unlabeled as far as which parts of which books are on each disc, and the books are not cleanly put on one disc per book. It's almost a complete waste of money for this reason.Also the performance is HORRIBLE. Whoever decided MP Osborne was the right person to narrate these stories should be ringing up aspirin at Rite Aid, because the decision was a bad one. MPO is a terrible reader, and this goes especially for her rendering of Annie, who she voices like a whiny 3-year-old.Definitely definitely pass.

My 6yo daughter was dying to get these -- she's read and loved all the books -- and she is enjoying them so far. Immediately my daughter said she wanted to hear "Mummies at Midnight" first -- and that's when I realized that not only are the 8 books split up over 5 CDs, there's not even a TRACK LISTING printed anywhere. Seriously. They're so cheap they can't spring for 8 CDs, ok -- but why on EARTH wouldn't they include a little sheet of paper with the track listing so you can figure out what books/chapters are on what CD?? For a few pennies more, this set would be dramatically better. I feel ripped off.

Great stories! I hate to be critical of such a great author but I wish someone else did the reading on the CDs. The author is the narrator and she's a little monotone and boring to listen to.

We bought these so that our daughter could listen to books in the car rather than watching movies on long trips. These stories are fun for the whole family. The only thing my husband and I don't like is actually the voice of the author. I feel really bad saying it but she just tries a little too hard. Other than that these are great books and you get a whole 8 stories! I would say that the age range for these is probably 3 to 9 years.

I loved this book, it is helpful to my collecting and my selling. It has wonderful pictures, and I love the section on '60's makers and just the way it is arranged in general is helpful and makes for fascinating reading. The only thing I would like to see with this book is a name index; this would make it so much more helpful as a reference. I do highly recommend it though, as a reference or just as a coffee table book.

And it does it very nicely. You get a little bit of the history of stop motion and learn about some of the seminal works in the genre. And you get good information about how to make things move in a way that looks natural. And you get some good information about lighting, building sets and building figures.This is simply an excellent introduction to actually doing stop motion animation. I used this book to make a short animation.You can't go wrong and if you don't know much about how to do animation but want to learn this is a great place to start.Highly recommended. It covers a lot of technical stuff in an easy to understand and not so technical way which is just terrific. Whether you are a amateur or aspiring professional you will benefit from this book.

This book is the basic bible about stop motion for any amateur wanting to learn the process regarding this art.It covers many aspects in a simple way, you can follow it and understand! which is the most important part. Tools and equipment, video, how to record your experiments ... to my fav part, the scenic design.Awesome, I love it and reccomend it!!!!

My elementary school age son picked Thomas Jefferson for his biography project this year and his teacher recommended this book. I did some research on my own after seeing the 1 star reviews and found this book to be fairly accurate along the lines of current historical consensus. I would definitely recommend this book to other elementary school age kids who have a project or want to learn more about the author of the Declaration of Independence, but be prepared to talk with your children about the historical context of the events of Jefferson's life to make sure they really understand everything.

Easy to read, interesting facts a young kid can retain.

I LOVE these books for my son and he loves reading them. I'm trying to buy them for every historical character.

In my opinion, Jefferson was probably the most accomplished of all our early Presidents. Once you read of his varied interest, his worldly reputation, and the areas of enlightenment he brought to the early American forefront, you will better understand his importance to the early development of the United States as a world power.History best remembers Jefferson as the author of The Declaration of Independence, a governor of Virginia Colony, minister to France. Secretary of State in Washington's first administration, vice-president to John Adams, and finally our 3rd President.All of the above are mileposts in his accomplishments but the true interest lies in the details. Jefferson opened up the White House to members of congress including friends as well as foes. He was interactive with truly the great men of the early revolution. Benjamin Franklin, George Washington, John Hancock, James Madison, John Monroe and many more founding fathers, He initiated the Louisiana Purchase, the Lewis and Clark Expedition, and finally he retired to his home at Monticello. He founded, along with James Madison The University in Virginia.Jefferson loved the arts. He played the violin and loved to dance. He read the classics with great appetite.. Architecture was his love and many of the plants at Monticello today were planted by Jefferson many decades ago. He was very learned and serious in his endeavors. He died on the 50th anniversary of the Signing Of The Declaration Of Independence. Fittingly enough he died on July 4th.

Is there any question that Jonathan Edwards is one of the United States's greatest religious thinkers and writers? No. Don't argue with me; it's true. Now, why don't people read his books all the time, instead of Joel Osteen or Rick Warren or some other popular, megachurch pastor? Probably because it's a lot harder to read Edwards. Edwards wrote A Treatise Concerning Religious Affections in 1746, and the verbosity and vocabulary reflect that of a learned 18th century clergyman. His style doesn't resound with most 21st century readers.Archaic style and language aside, The Religious Affections is worth the time it takes to wade through (especially for readers who tire of the breezy, superficial books churned out by popular pastors today). Edwards wants to make the point, still valid 270 years later, that religious "affections," or outward expressions of religion, do not make one a Christian, but should be present in Christians. In fact, "they who have but little religious affection, have certainly but little religion."What are the affections or signs that someone is a Christian? By their fruits you know them. humility, a changed life, Christ-like attitude, tenderness, an interest in spiritual growth, etc. Edwards encouraged a spiritual striving and a life devoted to the pursuit of holiness. He writes: "The more a true saint loves God with a gracious love, the more he desires to love him, and the more uneasy is he at his want of love to him; the more he hates sin, the more he desires to hate it. . . . The more he mourns for sin, the more he longs to mourn for sin. . . . The more he thirsts and longs for God and holiness, the more he longs to love, and breathe out his very should in longings after God." Archaic or not, passages like this in The Religious Affections ought to stoke Christians' fire and encourage them to pursue the religious affections.Read The Religious Affections in small chunks. Caught in both the glory and the drama of the First Great Awakening, Jonathan Edwards was tasked with the responsibility to defend God’s mighty outpouring of grace from both its detractors and its extremists.In this great work, Edwards sets out to accomplish three major goals (1) he shows from Scripture that the religious affections (“the more vigorous and sensible exercises of the inclination and will of the soul”) are indeed true manifestations of real Christian spirituality and of the holy life (2) he warns of a number of “experiences” that cannot either verify or falsify the reality of one’s professed conversion and (3) he enumerates several factors that are indicative of true conversion and regeneration. Chief among these last factors (as the quote below demonstrates) is the fruit of holy living—or Christian practice—carried out in the believer’s life.Application: This great work has a number of applications and uses. First and foremost it helps to delineate what true conversion looks like. In Edwards’ day it was hard to prove that one was truly “converted.” Often the Puritans looked for a series of finely ordered “steps” in one’s testimony of professed faith. The burden of proof lay heavy. In our day, it is much easier—we must simply give an “altar call” story, or a similar anecdote of “accepting Jesus into our heart.” Edwards speaks to both extremes by evaluating the conversion experience with a truly Biblical grid of analysis.Edwards shows that true conversion does indeed transform both the inward man, in his “affections” (love, joy, fear of the Lord, etc.) as well as the outward man in living out the will of God in his daily experience. While this edition is not strictly perfect, I can't help but award five stars to it, for the following reasons:I) it's Maimonides' "Guide of the Perplexed", I mean, the very fact a contemporary edition of this rare and wise work exists is praiseworthy; this translation from Arabic is, on my opinion, very readable (I remind you that works from peripatetic philosophers usually aren't so).II) lack of footnotes: the mutilation of footnotes from the first edition (that was done to condense the original three volumes into this single one) may hurt to us who like references, but I admit that this lacking makes reading this great book a lot more challenging, and thus, we are obliged to learn the subtleties of Maimonides by ourselves rather than simply expecting the translator to give us the answer, and most certainly that was the author's intention. So the edition becomes a hardcore reading, where the reader must really use his mind to solve difficulties and obscurities and look up in literature the references which Maimonides is using.III) the auxiliary parts of the edition are indeed very good, such as the small biography given and an account of the manuscript tradition, not to mention a brief analysis of the work. A final index of recurring passages of Scripture and quotations is also helpful.It must be said, however, that this edition is a republishing from a 1904 edition, and thus there are several typos, mostly in reference to Biblical passages. While it is frustrating to open your Bible, look up the indicated chapter and only then discover the passage was taken from another chapter, I consider this a minor issue. The worst part is the small typeface, of course.About the teachings contained here, I can only say they are undoubtedly clever solutions by one the finest philosophers from the Middle Ages. The work is deep in its lessons and is another brilliant proof and sonorous voice showing us that it's the Middle Ages, not the Renaissance, nor Modernity, the era where reason and faith were found together. This is enough to tell about the work, and more than it I can't say, as you will probably observe after you start reading the book.All that said, I highly recommend this book to those who are really interested in philosophy, that is, those who are indeed in a quest for truth.

I have purchased other translations of this seminal work by the great rabbi and philosopher, Maimonides and found the text difficult to follow at times. The two volume edition is a welcome improvement as the translation makes the content easier to connect with and understand and therefore more enjoyable to explore. The thoughts and ideas behind the words are very deep and numerous sources are referenced by Maimonides including Greek philosophers so this is not an easy read by any stretch. The wisdom and depth of the author is vast and so I found myself re-reading portions of the text each time gaining additional insights. If you want to explore the wisdom of Maimonides, pay the extra fee for this translation as it is well worth it.

In Leo Strauss' helpful introduction he writes that "the teaching of the Guide is then neither entirely public or speculative nor is it entirely secret or exegetic. For this reason the plan of the Guide is neither entirely obscure nor entirely clear." After struggling with Volume One for several weeks, I can certainly attest to this sentiment that the themes are neither "entirely obscure nor entirely clear."The first 1/3 of Volume One seems initially straightforward and is primarily focused with a linguistic interpretation of the Torah in order to show that much of the biblical text is best understood metaphorically rather than literally and therefore does not support a belief in the corporeality of God. For example, the biblical text which states that God created man "in his image" according to Maimonides is not meant to connote that God has either "shape or configuration" and therefore is corporeal, but rather is best translated to mean that God created man in his "likeness" reflecting man's "intellectual apprehension" as the divine link with a creator. Similarly, Maimonides writes that the biblical text which states "My face shall not be seen" does not suggest a literal "face" of God but highlights that the Hebrew word for "face" is typically used figuratively and therefore the correct interpretation of the face of God is that "God's existence as it veritably is cannot be grasped." Although I found this part of the Guide to be illuminating, the rest of Volume One seemed to be a scattered series of disconnected biblical insights from the necessary characteristics needed to attain "human perfection" to demonstrating that God can only be described through negation, with the last 1/3 of the text dedicated to a refutation of Mutakallimun. According to Strauss, this lack of clarity is deliberate since the "secrets of the Law in not a public but a secret explanation" and therefore "the secret teachings are not presented in an orderly fashion but are scattered throughout the book." He also suggests that Volume Two is more straightforward than Volume One.Despite being somewhat more "perplexed" than before reading the book, I'm fairly certain that any inability to derive more meaning is likely due to my own shortcomings rather than a lack of thoroughness or insight on the part of the text.

This book speaks for itself. The translation is excellent and the introductions (there are two) are the best I have ever read in any type of book. The book is worth buying for the introductions alone. Maimonides is not for the faint of heart nor should it be the first philosophical book a person reads. The more Aristotle and Torah you know the better but everyone needs to learn somewhere and Maimonides is the master. His language is archaic but can be mastered as you learn his system of thought. The writting itself is very good. A classic. But this edition is not fit to be sold. The print is about 5pt type and it is almost 400 pages. Give me 800 pages that I CAN SEE. I wish I had read the other review about the small type. If I hadn't seen it myself I would never had believed a publisher would do such a thing. I am going to ask for my money back. I was looking foward to reading a classic of Religious Studies, but the small print has taken all the joy out of it. I will try to find a better edition. Do NOT buy this one!
