This is a great book for starting out from scratch on this style of playing. The basis of Fingerstyle Blues or country blues is the steady thumb with the sycopated melody up top...this book will get you headed in the right direction with dozens of exercises that get progressively more difficult. It also covers some turnarounds and typical blues licks to get you started. This book is really for beginners...if you already know how to do Travis or Chet Atkins style playing I would think this may be to easy for you. As for me, I have never been able to play that style and this book seems to be getting me there....muscle memory is slow process but I definitely am seeing improvement over the past month.I have a number of Joseph Alexander books and you can find your level pretty quickly on where you are..all are excellent and the included sound tracks are essential to getting the sounds in your head.
I've bought and used many fingerstyle blues books. This one is different and valuable. Do understand that this is NOT a book of complete blues pieces. There are only a few complete blues pieces in the book. Instead, it is "riffs and licks" book, and specifically in the key of E throughout. So the scope of it is very specific. Also, this is not really a beginner book, but beginners can use it. Beginners will be able to handle the easiest licks in each section, but will get frustrated by the more difficult licks, as he develops each concept. To really get the most out of this, you should already be a competent intermediate level fingerstyle blues player. That said, it is very good book that shows how specific nuances are developed. Bends, pull offs, hammer-ons, vibrato, syncopation, up the neck, triplets, on and on. In each case, he starts with a very easy lick, then expands on it to develop it into a more complex phrase. While there are some complete pieces at the end, it is mostly up to the student to build this material into their own pieces. In other words, here is the tool set, learn to play them, then use your own imagination. As a guitar teacher, I can really appreciate this style of learning, and I do it myself with my own lesson material. I am glad to see this book getting 5 stars from most readers, as this book is little bit "vulnerable" to bad reviews because it is not a song book. This is a book for the serious fingerstyle blues player who wants a more complete understanding of the craft.
Great book for learning finger picking. I've played guitar for years and I even learned to finger pick, but in the classical way. This book starts off really easy, but I realized that I needed a thumb pick to deaden the strings with my palm. The book is very clear an concise. You get to the exercises right away. The really cool thing about this book is you can buy the Kindle version and download the accompanying MP3 files straight from the website. Some Kindle books you actually have to use the Kindle or Kindle Fire to listen to the files. Not this one, I can sit at my computer and practice instead of looking at a tiny screen.
i am a late arrival to fingerpicking and i spent several months learning songs out of books, but really wasn't "learning" anything. I came across this book and it is a totally different approach to what i had been trying and it is fantastic. instead of playing rudimentary versions of songs, this book provides the exercises to learn and develop from. starts out very basic (thank you) and slowly gets more complex. basically you go through the examples and learn like the back of your hand and move on. Before long you are bending strings, hammering on and pulling off. learn the chord shapes scales and various picking patterns. Also I like the fact it transitions you into using the whole fret board and not just the first position. I would say after comprehending this book, you would be an intermediate player with an understanding of how to continue to get better. The audio download is dimply to use and very helpful. Now i look at my original songbooks and can't believe how simple they are. thank you Joseph Alexander
I bought this book on kindle about a week ago, and I really liked how straight to the point the book was. In addition, the emphasis on rhythm and foot tapping is commendable. The exercises change flavor quite often and do not become repetetive, however, they become difficult very early in the book, so it is important to keep in mind that this is not a book for beginner players. I would recommend this book to serious players who want to learn fingerpicking and have at least gone through a beginner's guide before this.
This is not a song book. It's a book full f useful and challenging blues finger-style licks and techniques that will improve your playing. I bought this book, because I wanted to learn how to play a few of my favorite finger-style songs, but I have never learned any finger-style techniques past basic Travis picking. With a metronome and some dedicated practice, I greatly improved my finger-style abilities. Specifically, this book enabled me to learn Going to California (Led Zeppelin), To be Alone (Hozier), and many more finger-style songs.
I struggled with fingerstyle guitar for years. Never could get it down. This book helped build up my proficiency bit by bit, and now it is second nature. Not only that, but some of the lessons I learned here helped me in other areas of my playing. Making a habit of keeping time with my foot being the best example. Not only has it helped my playing, but helped me improve my ability to sing while playing. Definitely recommended!
I'm a beginner on guitar and this book is perfect for me to make progress. The book compliments my other books on Travis picking and has helped inspire me to keep on practicing. I love the genre and am confident that using this book will build not only my muscle memory but my confidence. I recommend this book.
